Song Birds / Level 2 / Handbells, 3 - 5 Octaves
Birds have always fascinated me. I have spent much time outdoors and even my own yard listening to the birds singing and calling to one another. They have so many songs and calls. As well birds colour the sky with their beautiful plumage and freedom to fly. Song Birds is an impression of the sounds of nature, songs of birds and all their beauty.

Serenade / Level 2 / Handbells, 3 - 5 Octaves
Serenade may be interpreted many different ways. The music could embody the idea of persuasion, courtship and/or lamenting. The choices are up to those who perform and/or listen to this music. Serenade includes an opportunity to practice several handbell techniques. These include mallet on the table, swings, shakes, echo, and staccato (thumb damp, pluck or mallet). It also has a section where the bass has the melody and the music moves to a major key. There are many dynamic markings which encourage musical interpretation for ringers.

Constellations / Level 3- / Handbells & Handchimes
The night sky is fascinating. As darkness grows the stars come forward. They sparkle, dance and invite wonder and imagination. For millennia, people and all living creatures have seen this same dance and created stories, “What is out there? Who is out there? How are we connected?” Constellations is the dance of the stars on a clear night. How many can you see?

Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity
Level 4 / Handbells & Handchimes, 3-5 Octaves
Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity was written by English composer, Gustav Holst (1874 – 1934) in 1914. Holst was interested in astrology and conceived the idea for The Planets in 1913. Jupiter is the fourth movement of the Planets, Opus 32, a large orchestral work. Each planet is represented with a distinct character. In 1921 Holst was asked to compose music for the poem, “I vow to thee, my Country”, written by Cecil Spring-Rice in 1908. He adapted the music from a section of Jupiter and harmonized the tune to make it usable as a hymn. The tune was called Thaxted named after the village where Holst lived for many years. Michael Perry (1942-1996) was who a Church of England clergyman wrote the words, “O God beyond all Praising” in 1982. This arrangement of Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity includes all the main musical themes from Holst’s orchestral score.

Fleeting Moments
Fleeting Moments is a duet for solo handbell and piano. It begins with a flowing solo handbell melody with rolling arpeggio piano accompaniment. The middle section presents a warmer contrast to the opening themes. The last section offers a return of the opening melody with a different harmonic structure. This composition presents the handbell soloist and pianist with opportunities for rich musical expression. As such it encompasses a melancholy reflection of “Fleeting Moments.”

Paths to Reconciliation
When the pandemic landed in 2020, many regular handbell ensembles began a lengthy pause.
This became a time for solo, bell tree and small ensembles to flourish. 2020 also brought forward
a focus on much racial oppression with the call for truth and reconciliation becoming more persistent.
In 2021 the aboriginal peoples of Canada called again for truth and reconciliation as tragic issues
were uncovered. Paths to Reconciliation endeavours to reflect some of the experiences of the
past and look forward to a community for all.

Winter Lullaby
Level 2 / Handbells, 3-5 Octaves
Winter Lullaby may be used for the winter season or the title could be altered to Summer Lullaby or Autumn Lullaby. There were two thoughts that led to this composition. One was a reflection of my dear cousin, Lynda, who passed away on a winter day. The other was reminiscing about the time when my own children were growing up and we would read together at bedtime. We would share stories and imagine many different scenarios. From these ideas came a gentle melody with reflective thoughts. Winter Lullaby was written originally for a 3 octave handbell choir and then expanded to include 4 and 5 octaves.

Kaleidoscope
Level 3 / Handbells & Handchimes, 3-5 Octaves
Kaleidoscope is “everchanging themes and variations” and is to be presented as having “a playful spirit”. The two main themes appear in various arrangements. The opening “mallet on the foam” reappears later in the score. This music invites movement through a light-hearted presentation of gladness and delight. Kaleidoscope was a winner of the Alberta Guild of English Handbell Ringers' Fred Merrett Award for New Compositions 2023
