The first verse of this song was found as early as 1650, it was updated in 1775 and again in 1833 and I have made small changes to it.

God rest you merry gentlefolk,

Let nothing you dismay

For Jesus Christ, our Savior

Was born upon this day,

To save us all from Satan's power

When we were gone astray.

From God our Heavenly Father

A blessed angel came,

And unto certain shepherds

Brought tidings of the same,

How that in Bethlehem was born

The Son of God by name,

In the world that we are living were commercialism seems to reign supreme, 

let us not forget the baby who put the real meaning in 

Christ Mas (literally Christ’s day)
