A ZINE FOR COLLECTIVE ACTION
Democracy is a Climate Solution is a self-published zine created with the purpose of increasing climate hope and driving political engagement. One side is an assemblage of climate initiatives that form an ocean wave, which also functions as a 11x17 poster. On the reverse side is text explaining the initiatives in our collage and a call to action opposing Bill 5. When folded, the poster can also be distributed as a magazine.
TINY TOAD, BIG DISCOVERY!
The smallest known vertebrates, even smaller than some ants, are toads belonging to the Brachycephalus genus. Recent fieldwork in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil has led to the discovery of Brachycephalus dacnis, a toadlet measuring just 6.95 millimeters on average. This makes it the second smallest vertebrate identified, following another Brachycephalus species that measures only about 0.5 mm shorter. This species is named for the Dacnis conservation project that facilitated its discovery. Researchers conducting field surveys on their 325-acre private reserve in Ubatuba, São Paulo between 2021 and 2022 were initially drawn to the species by its distinctive cricket-like calls. Genetic analysis later confirmed that B. dacnis is distinct from other known species in the genus, making it the seventh recognized species of 'flea-toadlet'.

In a world increasingly dominated by technology, political divisiveness, and social unrest, the need for empathy in our society today is more pressing than ever. Empathy – the ability to understand the feelings and lived experiences of others - is not just a social nicety. It is a fundamental human capability that should be nurtured and prioritized, a tool for building stronger, more inclusive communities and societies. Empathy encourages kindness and understanding. It is the bridge that connects us to others, fostering a sense of unity and shared humanity. It reminds us that beneath our many differences – of race, culture, religion, or political belief – we are all human beings with similar hopes, fears, and dreams... Read More
I remember looking up at Laura Muntz Lyall’s painting Interesting Story with my big sister; it always brought her to tears. She said it felt like it captured the way she loved me. I remember feeling this same way looking at the girls playing in Dorothea Sharp’s work. There’s an almost indescribable element of girlhood that comes through certain artworks and reaches deep into my chest... Read More
I often contemplate my identity and my perspectives on gender and disability politics through my art. As a young queer woman living with chronic illness, the marginalized parts of myself are invisible. I find it challenging to represent them visually and I am drawn to that challenge. The medium of paint allows my hand to be visible in the marks and textures I create, breaking the need for literal representation.
This unfinished series was inspired by an assignment in my painting methods course for which I had to explore shape and its edges. The finished piece is what was created for this assignment. I approached it as an opportunity to investigate the boundaries of the space I hold - what shape I am or could be. I primed a wood canvas with gesso and layered thin washes of colour, intentionally building depth in the flat composition. Compositionally simple scenes allow for the focus to stay on the moment; the feeling and the flesh. Not necessarily the societally ideal image, the figures presented are both abstracted representations of my self and of... Read More
