This is a list of universities in Belgium. In Belgium, which is a federal state, the constitution attributes legislative power over higher education to the Communities.[1] The Dutch-speaking Flemish Community, the French Community and the German Community thus determine which institutes of higher education they organise or recognise, and which diplomas may be legally issued by these institutes.Below is a list of recognised institutes of higher education in Belgium sorted by the responsible Community.[2]

According to the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities[3] and the THES - QS World University Rankings,[4] four Flemish universities (University of Antwerp, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Ghent University and KU Leuven) are among the top 150 universities in Europe and top 300 universities worldwide.

All recognised Flemish university colleges (hogescholen) are associated with a Flemish university. The following university colleges, which issue professional bachelor, academic bachelor's and master's degrees, are recognised by the Flemish government:

Belgium as a whole does not have as much of a common national identity as many other countries because it is divided into two distinct areas, Flanders and Wallonia. The Flemish are the inhabitants of Flanders and they speak Dutch; Wallonia, on the other hand, is predominantly French speaking. Because of this, there is no national television or newspaper that caters for everyone, and each region keeps pretty much to themselves, including within the field of education. You will find that whichever university you choose, it will be either Flemish or Walloon, and although there are many courses taught in English, the other main language will always be either Dutch or French but rarely both.

This is not to say there is any animosity between the two sides, more that there is less integration when the languages are so different and the regions are so distinct. Brussels is slightly different in that it lies between the two, with a mix of both Dutch and French spoken, as well as English and a host of other languages, as it is the governmental center of the European Union.

Founded in 1817, Ghent University is younger by far but also well-regarded in the world rankings, coming in the top 100. Covering 11 campuses, international students generally number about 10% of the 41,000 student population. All bachelor programmes are taught in Dutch here, but many of the Masters and postgraduate courses can be pursued in English.

Another university founded in 1817, the University of Lige is the only public university for French speakers from Brussels. More than half of its budget is spent on research, with much inter-disciplinary research undertaken by its faculty.

The Free University of Brussels was founded in 1834, but split into two in 1969. The two different universities are known as the Free Brussels Universities and continue to collaborate today. They are ULB, which is French-speaking, and VUB, which is predominantly Dutch; together, more than 20% of their student intake is international.

The university ranks joint 52nd for engineering and technology and joint 55th for life sciences in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021. The University of Ghent is another large university, teaching around 48,570 students across 11 faculties.

Ranked joint 221st in the world, VUB was formed when the Universit Libre de Bruxelles split in 1970. Both universities have the same name when translated into English (Free University of Brussels), so both avoid this version to prevent confusion. VUB is known for its high research activity, with its research teams internationally recognised in many disciplines of fundamental and applied research.

Located in the city of Antwerp in the heart of Belgium, the University of Antwerp is ranked joint 233rd in the world in 2022. The school was founded in 2003 and today has around 20,800 students, of which nearly 20 percent are international. The University of Antwerp scores particularly well in the arts and humanities subjects - it ranks joint 249th in the world for the subject area.

With 11 faculties spread over four campuses, the Universit de Lige ranks joint 480th globally. Founded in 1817, today the school boasts 25,421 students. Universit de Lige performs best for its life sciences and medicine subjects, for which it ranks joint 287th. Its highest ranked subject is agriculture and forestry, ranking 151-200.

Universit de Mons has around 10,000 students, seven faculty and three schools. The university is French-speaking and its main campus is in the province of Hainaut, Belgium, near the French-Belgian border. The school was founded in 2009, following a merger between the University of Mons-Hainaut and the Faculty of Engineering of Mons. Today it ranks 651-700 globally.

The second-largest city in Belgium, Antwerp is well-known for famous Flemish painter Sir Peter Paul Rubens, diamonds (more than 70 percent of all diamonds are traded in Antwerp), fashion (of particular note are the Antwerp Six) and for having the second-largest port in Europe.

Belgium is a multilingual country, with three official languages (Flemish, French and German). Many more are spoken day-to-day in its universities and in the vast range of international organisations that are based in Brussels, its capital.

Universities offer three levels of education (bachelor, master, and doctorate) in five standard areas: philosophy and human sciences, natural and applied sciences, law, and medicine. Additionally, each university has various schools, faculties, and units that specialize in other fields of study (for example, criminology, agriculture, archeology, art history, etc.).

University colleges in Belgium are higher education institutions offering specialized professional education. While universities are more interested in research activities, college classes focus solely on practice.

In total, five educational areas are taught at university colleges: humanities and social sciences (political science, sociology, communications, law, economics and management, psychology and pedagogy), healthcare (biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, nursing), science and technology (engineering, architecture, applied science, mathematics and IT), art (visual and applied).
