North Korea Travel Myths. Are They Real?

Many people believe in many myths when attempting to visit North Korea. Let’s see if you know whether some myths are real or fake.

Travelling to North Korea is a pain to get there.

TRUE. One will have a far more difficult time getting to North Korea. You will need to book a guided tour by an approved government travel operator. While it is not the only place to do this as it is also done in other socialist countries. These guided tours show the best parts of North Korea and while unguided tours are prohibited it is not out of the ordinary as other countries such Iran or Tibet do the same thing as well

You can only travel to the capital city Pyongyang

FALSE. You can indeed visit all but one of the 9 provinces of North Korea. You can even see the less developed sides of the provinces where it is fully shown to the visitor. Even the guides during tours admit they are still developing and have their problems but still want to show their best side.

You can’t communicate with North Korean citizens

FALSE. You are free to talk to the North Korean citizens. However, it is considered impolite to randomly talk to a stranger in North Korean culture. However, on public transport, young students and older folks tend to strike up conversations. This is especially common during national holidays where North Korean citizens are normal people and enjoy social interactions.

There are many other myths and unknown facts about visiting North Korea but keep in mind that the people are normal people who know about their problems; it can be fully seen even with a guided tour.
