Our Mission

Half of North Korea’s 25 million people are affected by issues such as malnutrition and lack of medical resources. We strive to raise international awareness of the North Korean humanitarian crises, beyond discussion of nuclear weapons and politics. Our aim is to motivate individuals to take action to help North Koreans in need.

Sydney P: Founder, Chairman

Hello! My name is Sydney. I started Behind the DMZ in order to raise awareness on who North Korea truly is and what we can do to help those in need inside the country. As a South Korean, I’ve always been interested in the Koreas, drawing me to try and understand the relationship between the North and the South. It only felt right to do whatever I can to help fellow Koreans, regardless of the history, border, and title.

Timothy L: President

Hi, I'm Tim! I am the current and second President of the Behind the DMZ Club. I am South Korean and I joined the club in hopes of learning more about the history of my country and to spread awareness about the current problems regarding North Korea. With rising tensions due to the global COVID pandemic, I am also interested in the relationship between the North and South, as well as their relationship with the rest of the world.

Julia Heo: Vice-President

Hi! I'm Julia Heo. I joined Behind the DMZ to not only educate myself on the current status of North Korea, but also educate others through writing articles. I hope that through our work, we can spread awareness, spark good change, and improve our diplomatic relations with North Korea.

Ryan K: Editor-in-Chief

Hello, my name is Ryan and I'm here to document the several problems and news going on in North Korea. As it is rather isolated and full of mystery, it's rather difficult to get a full view of what they're up to these days. With the rise of the Internet, I want to write and share the stories of North Korea and make changes for the future.

Tomas C: Writer, Researcher

Hi! My name is Tomas, and I've been working with BTD to research information about North Korea. I joined because I was interested in the backstories of my Korean roots and wanted to delve further into the history while making a difference.
