Accent Marks
In Spanish, accent marks (or "tildes" in Spanish) are used to indicate which syllable of a word is stressed.
The stress is important in Spanish because it can change the meaning of a word. For example, the word "papa" without an accent mark means "potato," but "papá" with an accent mark means "father."
Here are some basic rules for using accent marks in Spanish:
Words that end in a vowel, "n," or "s" are stressed on the second-to-last syllable by default. For example: "casa" (house), "planta" (plant), "ventanas" (windows).
Words that end in a consonant other than "n" or "s" are stressed on the last syllable by default. For example: "feliz" (happy), "animal" (animal), "doctor" (doctor).
If a word is not stressed according to the default rules, it requires an accent mark to indicate where the stress falls. For example: "teléfono" (telephone), "rápido" (fast), "fácil" (easy).
In Spanish, words that are stressed on the third-to-last syllable or earlier will always require an accent mark. For example: "pájaro" (bird), "música" (music).
It's important to pay attention to the accent marks when reading and writing in Spanish, as they can change the meaning of a word.
Potato: Papa (pronounced pa’-pa with emphasis on the first syllable)
Dad: Papá (pronounced pa-pa’ with emphasis on the second syllable)
