Terminology within Letterboxd!
Within every community there will be different terminology that you must become familiar with in order to properly integrate into the community, Letterboxd is no different! Much of the jargon specific to Letterboxd that you must know either come from sections of the app itself, or terminology used within the film industry. Below is a compiled list of the most important lexis you need to know for Letterboxd.
Film- a motion picture or movie
Protagonist- the lead character in a film
Antagonist- a character or obstacle who works to prevent the lead character in a film from accomplishing their goal
Flashback- a moment in a film that interrupts the chronological order of a story in order to add exposition to a story
Exposition- the essential information in film, such as background details, character introductions, or establishing a story’s setting and context
Diary- a section in Letterboxd that displays an accounts reviews as well as watched movies
Journal- a section in Letterboxd that provides news related to movies
Network- a section in Letterboxd that shows the accounts of friends you have added, telling how many movies they have watched, how many likes they have, and how many lists they have
How to identity an Outsider!
Since Letterboxd is a space that allows all sorts of reviews and communication, it can be a little difficult to spot outsiders to the community! However, if somebody is unfamiliar with the terminology above, chances are they are not integrated into the community yet. On top of this, outsiders can be spotted if they break unspoken rules such as having spoilers for a movie, without listing it as such! This is very frowned upon in the Letterboxd Community so make sure to avoid making that mistake!
