I have a passion for directing documentary and unscripted content, more specifically pertaining to the lives of artists. A common theme across the two documentary projects I've directed is community around art and how connection with others is integral to growth in ones craft.
A Time to Call Home - an experimental docushort series
'A Time to Call Home' presents three artists as they explore their internal and external relationships with their respective crafts at different points in their artistic development.
NXANXCY, a songwriter, ruminates on the vulnerability that comes with creating and how her community assists in her growing comfort with that.
Eden Tate, a fashion designer and photographer, discusses the trust she has in her community and subsequent audience to understand her work if it's intended for them.
Finally, Ziggy 'Tomboy' Cooper's joy in his work comes from translating, articulating and sharing his own experiences. He is intent on aiding those who don't understand and explores his own psyche through that process.
All artists discuss the creative climate of Bristol and how it's existence breathes life into their passions and subsequently strengthens their identities as artists.
I directed these films with the intention of exploring young artists relationship with their craft and with their surroundings in Bristol. To accompany, we curated visual narratives for each artist to tell their stories as they overlap thematically and gradually more visually as each part overlaps with the previous artist's film. In these overlaps, every new artist is seen walking into their set and removing a piece of the last's, claiming the space for themselves and embodying the process of Bristol as an heirloom of craft and creative pride.
Transnormative - a documentary short
'Transnormative' follows Xanthe Kween, a trans drag artist on their journey towards their first time hosting an event at What A Drag!, a monthly trans-exclusive experimental drag cabaret. As he traverses a difficult time in his mental health, he finds strength in his community enough to take a next step in actualising his true self.
