This is me when I was a Daisy Girl Scout
Hi! My name is Sophie, and I am an Ambassador Girl Scout in Davis, California. Thank you for visiting my website!
While working as a counselor at an outdoor education camp near Davis, I noticed a recurring behavior among campers when they encountered bees. Many would run, cry, swat at them, or even try to kill them. What concerned me most was not just their fear, but the instinct to harm the bees.
Whenever I asked why they reacted that way, the answer was always the same: they didn’t want to get stung. I would then ask if they knew what bees actually do. I was shocked to learn that many had no idea. Even those who said that bees pollinate flowers often did not understand what pollination means or why it matters.
While human encounters are not the leading cause of bee population decline, a lack of awareness about the vital role bees play in our ecosystem makes people fearful or indifferent. Bees are essential pollinators that support the growth of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and wild plants that entire ecosystems depend on.
This realization inspired my project: to create more habitat for bees while also teaching children how to support pollinators themselves. By building bee habitats and educating kids about pollination and environmental stewardship, I hope to replace fear with understanding and help foster a generation that values and protects these essential creatures.
