The Priory Convent of Franciscans was operative from 1242. This area with all outbuildings a dwelling house and farmstead were demolished in 1899. The Bedford Borough Council provided a Bowling Green, Tennis Courts and Recreation Ground in 1902.
The green was first occupied by West End Bowling Club and in 1954 it was renamed Bedford Priory. Over the years Bedford Priory has had a good reputation for friendliness which we hope will continue for many years.
We were also privileged to visit the Chelsea Pensioners Hospital and have a match against them with a superb meal afterwards. They came to Priory on 17 July 2016 for a return match.
As well, last year we visited Fry’s Island in the middle of the Thames to play The Bohemian’s and crossing the Thames by boat. Again we had another brilliant day. We have also had several other trips out too.
Please feel free to contact the club who will be happy to insert any of your historic stories about Bedford Priory Bowls Club.
