CORE FUNCTIONS AND SYSTEMATIC ROUTINES
Becyclist develops riders’ capacity for independent decision making and applying systematic routines when performing that underpin safe and responsible cycling strategies.
Instructors must ensure all riders are given sufficient opportunity to demonstrate the cycling test, particularly in Becyclist Level 2, by exposing them to increasingly challenging cycling environments as their skills and confidence grow.
Before your course it is really important to have a few things sorted including: Your bike, your helmet and your clothing. We’ve put together some tips for you to make sure you are all set before taking part in training.
Your bike:
Make sure you check that your bike is in good working order, with the tyres inflated and the moving parts working well. If you need to take it to a bike shop before-hand, don’t leave it to the last minute!
BEFORE EVERY RIDE, REMEMBER TO CHECK .. Air Breaks Chain.
If you don't have a bike we can provide one.
Your helmet:
A requirement of the course is that you know how to fit your helmet properly.
Your helmet should sit on top of your head comfortably, (not too tight or too loose), with the peak sitting about two fingers width from your eyebrows.
The side adjusters should sit just below your ears forming a nice V on the side of your head, and the chin strap should allow for two fingers to fit between it and your chin.
Your clothes
👉 For pupils and children:
You should wear whatever you would normally wear to school, but you must also be prepared for the weather.
On cold or wet days, make sure that you have your coat and gloves, and an extra layer or two. With a change of clothes available, just in case.
On warm sunny days make sure you have put on a good amount of suncream at the start of the day and keep drinking water throughout the day.
. And a top tip – as you will be using a bit more energy than normal bring an extra snack, also making sure you’ve had a good breakfast before school.
👉 For adults:
Be on time.
Always wear sports wear during the cycling session.
Stash high-carb, low-fat snacks in a fanny pack or pockets, so you can eat them on the training. Dried fruit, bagels, energy bars, and energy gel are all good options.
Drink plenty of water or sports drinks along with the food, and frequently throughout the training.
Wear bright clothing, a reflective vest, or have flashing lights. These all increase your visibility.
Wear comfortable shoes. Riding a bike in high heels or flip flops is never a good idea. Wear shoes that fit snugly, are flat soled, and have no dangling pieces that could become caught in the bike structure and spokes.
Don't tie clothing around your waist. It could unexpectedly come loose and wrap around your wheel, throwing you head-first into the ground or road. It could also become entangled in the chain or obscure your rear light and reflector.
Wear eye protection. Dirt, pebbles, or even bugs can fly into your eyes, causing temporary vision difficulty. A pair of bicycle-appropriate glasses will help prevent this.
