On Monday evenings, we have a presence at Community Freedom's Give Hope Program. This program is aimed at helping formerly incarcerated men get back on their feet. We also partner with a staffing and warehouse business that has a "second chance" program. We are trying to help folks get out of generational, systemic poverty. Many times the people who commit crimes do so out of poverty. We want to be a part of helping people heal from past traumas and opening up new opportunities for them to have a successful, thriving life.
On Wednesday evenings, we lead the Middle School and High School youth group at Hesed House. These kids are staying at the shelter and on Wednesdays, they have a space and time that is for them. It's meaningful for the residents, the families and most importantly the youth. We are investing in them, showing up every week and helping them know they deserve love.
Those are the regular things Becoming is a part of each and every week. In addition, we have participated, attended, organized and led interfaith, ecumenical work on issues related to the violence in Israel/Palestine.
Becoming has helped organize & promote, alongside HUB, two film screenings about policing and mass incarceration. The answer to the mass incarceration problem facing the U.S. isn't more policing or more prisons. Research shows this doesn't work and other countries have figured this out. They are doing some uplifting rehabilitative work. We want to be at the table and helping find solutions that build up community rather than put people in cages.
