To play the Pokemon Trading Card game you first need to have a Deck.
A deck consists of 60 cards these include:
Pokemon Cards
Basic Pokemon, Stage 1, Stage 2, V, VMAX, VSTAR, V UNION
Supporter Cards
These cards can only be used once per turn. Easilly identifiable because they are normally named after a pokemon trainer e.g. Marnie.
Trainer cards
These are defined by Items and Tools.
Can be used as many times as you like in a turn.
Energy Cards
Fire, Water, Grass, Lightning, Fighting, Steel, Psychic, normal.
There are also special energy that have aditional effects.
Now you know the different types of cards you will find inside a deck. Let us look at an example of a competetive pokemon deck
This is Palkia VSTAR:
One thing that hopefully you have noticed with this example is the amount of copies of certain cards there are in this deck.
For example, there are 3 Sobble in this deck. This means that when you start a game of Pokemon you are maximising your chances of having this card in your opening hand. This is what we call Consistency
Another thing to notice is how the ratio of different types of cards is made up.
In this deck there is:
17 Pokemon
36 Trainer cards (including supporters)
7 Energy cards
As you can see the Deck is mainly made up of Trainer cards. These are the MOST important cards in your deck, they allow you to search through your deck for the cards that you need, or even disrupt your opponent from playing the game.
Pokemon are the second most important because without them you cannot start the game (Failure to find a basic pokemon when setting up results in a mulligan and your opponent taking 1 extra card)
You want to see these regularly enough, but not too many that you have nothing to powern up your current pokemon
REMEMBER: you can only have 6 Pokemon at play at the same time.
In this Deck there is only 7 Energy cards.
IMPORTANT: Not every deck will need 7 energy, some will need more and some will need less.
This deck only needs 7 energy because the Main attacker only needs two water energy to attack.
When creating your deck, look at how many energies your pokemon need and choose your energy based on this.
The first step to creating your own deck is to choose a Pokemon you want to base your deck around
This is Pikachu V.
Pikachu is a lightning type so you are required to have at least 3 lightning energy to use his Thunderbolt attack.
This means that you will want more energy in your deck. (at least 10 or more).
To support your deck you will want to look for trainer cards that allow you to search for lightning Pokemon and Energies.
When building your deck, you ALWAYS want to think about how cards will be helping you attack with this pokemon. Trainers and Energies role is to support this pokemon
When thinking about which pokemon to choose as your main attacker, pick a pokemon which has high HP and does a decent amount of damage or ability which can defeat your oppoenent's pokemon.
