Flagship Project: First Impressions Last

My portfolio is centered on the importance of First Impressions in the Hospitality Industry. Through this passion project I was able to combine my first love of the service industry with my extensive experience in education to Instructional Design Skills and Adult Learning Theory. I used the ADDIE Model as the blueprint of the course and have organized the portfolio to best highlight each step. Through these steps, I created multiple iterations of this training: synchronous, asynchronous, LMS eLearning, and an instructional video.

Analysis

Training Needs AnalysisFirst step: facilitate a scoping meeting with key stakeholders including Subject Matter Experts (SME). As a result of this meeting a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) is performed.

Throughout the entirety of the course development, I return to these notes to ensure that the goals and objectives are aligned and being met.

Learner PersonasSecond step: identify the target audience. Learner Personas (or avatars) are created to keep learners at the forefront of the design and development phase.

For me, having the Learner Persona to visualize, instead of just an abstract idea, was paramount in the building of this course. Like the TNA, Learner Personas are continually referenced throughout the course.

Design

Course ScriptThird and fourth steps: the outline is well mapped out using Learning Outcomes (LO) generated from the scoping meeting. From the outline a script was created to help visualize a road map for the course.

When working on this stage, I read the script aloud so it conveyed a sense of conversational teaching.

StoryboardingFifth step: using the script to visualize the framework helps develop a cohesive storyboard. This storyboard outlines the learning solution's many elements such as, images, text, audio and interactions to be reviewed and approved by stakeholders.

When combining the content with research based adult learning theory methods, I was able to design a balanced storyboard.

Develop

Instructor-led Slide DeckSixth step: create a training visual for synchronous trainings. Include engagement strategies following the principles of adult learning theory.

Planning time for learners to practice and implement LOs gives ample space to be creative!

Facilitator GuideSeventh step: design a facilitator guide to manage course content and delivery during face-to-face or synchronous sessions.

It is essential to first play out how I would facilitate the training in person. From there, I am able to organize notes for the facilitator in a structured and intuitive fashion. Thus, making the course facilitation guide fully supported for implementation.

Participant WorkbookEighth step: extend and deepen the participant's learning with an interactive participant guide.

The participants' workbooks enhance and contribute to the learners' understanding and retention of the content. Including guiding questions and giving ample space for note-taking, further aligns the course with the principles of adult learning theory . The guide is also available as a fillable pdf to accommodate the tech-savvy learner.

Implement

Instructional VideoNinth step: utilize Adobe Premier Pro to create and edit on-demand instructional videos. Since this is click-and-play, minor adjustments with engagement activities are easily modified.

Structuring the audios, visuals, and transitions was a tedious undertaking. The results turned out to be one of my most proud learning solutions to date.

LMS eLearning ModuleTenth step: refer to the storyboard and other products developed for the course to build an interactive LMS-ready course using Articulate Storyline 360.

Utilizing Storyline 360 proved to be an invaluable tool, especially when collaborating with stakeholders.

Evaluate

Course CompletionEleventh step: learners will walk away with tangible action plans. Expectations are clearly communicated to the learners for immediate implementation. Data will be collected and used to ensure all KPIs are met.

Ownership of learning is enforced since the learner creates an original action plan ready for implementation. This makes the course relevant to the learner and provides stakeholders a way to see immediate results.

End of Course SurveyTwelfth step: keep the survey short, meaningful, and easy to access. Responses help in future iterations of the course. It is important to stay open to feedback and have willingness to modify as needed.

Having a variety of question types deters users from randomly clicking the same responses. By prioritizing this area, I feel the stakeholders receive more genuine feedback.
