While it's difficult to ascertain the degree to which auto burglaries have dropped off, specifically along Joaquin Miller Rd. and Skyline Blvd., from just the Beat 22Y data, as you can see, there has been a decline between August and October. Please note: JM Park was closed for several days in Sep-Oct timeframe, due to red flag weather and fire risk warnings.

Aug. 16, 2020: A small team of Friends of Joaquin Miller Park and the 22Y Neighborhood Action Council met this morning at J. M. Park, and installed approximately 45 signs along the main entrances and parking areas along J.M. Park (pond/steps area, playground, Robin Perry field, Sanborn St. entrance, as well as the entrances to Sequoia/Bayview Trail, and Big Trees Trail.) Thank you to Dale, Linda and Jay for their efforts!
We will continue to petition OPD and city staff to devote patrol resources to this area, to help further prevent car break-ins at the entrances to this beautiful park. And we may explore the possibility of setting up a neighbor volunteer walking patrol schedule online. (TBD).
Aug. 14, 2020: The signs and wire stands have arrived. If you can volunteer an hour or so this Sunday morning (Aug. 16, 9:00am) to help install the signs, please see the Sign-Up Genius link here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D4CAEA62CA3FDC34-installing
Thank you!
Aug. 13, 2020: One neighbor has logged a request with Oakland Public Works to clean up the glass along J.M. Road
[From Nextdoor]: glass cleanup Joaquin Miller Road. I called public works today to request glass cleanup on Joaquin Miller Road. If you want your street to be clean call 510-615-5566. my case number is 1036934 -- their email is oak311@oaklandca.gov
Aug. 12, 2020: Response last night from OPD Capt. J. Bassett (Area 3) regarding my inquiry about the recent arrest of car burglars, and if they're connected to the J.M. Road break-ins:
Good evening.
Yes, two individuals (one male adult and one male juvenile) were arrested for multiple burglaries and robberies. The investigators are still sifting through the evidence, so I don't know at this point how many burglaries they have been linked to.
I have directed additional patrols [to J.M. Road/Park] but with dozens of calls standing throughout the day it is difficult for officers to find the time for proactive patrols.
It should be noted that some of the stolen items recovered were from thefts that had not been reported to law enforcement.
Thank you very much for the signs. The more we remind each other (and especially out-of-town visitors) of the prevalence of auto burglary, the fewer valuables will be stolen.

Aug. 11, 2020: Through the wonderful generosity of our neighbors, we have met (and even slightly exceeded) our fundraising goal! The signs (see further below) have been purchased and should be delivered Friday 8/14 or Saturday 8/15. With the bit of extra money raised, we've printed up 100 half-page fliers, and placed fliers on about 30 cars' windshields today parked along J.M. Road by the two main park entrances (see pictures below/right). Will do more cars (time permitting) tomorrow and Thursday.
Additionally, I spoke with two leaders at Friends of Joaquin Miller Park (http://www.fojmp.org ), and they will help rally their members to help us get the signs installed this weekend, in addition to neighbors who had volunteered to help via NextDoor or Go Fund Me. More details and online volunteer signup to come...
Aug. 10, 2020: With the assistance of my 15-year old camera crew (and resident iPhone guru), I took a quick survey along JM Road this morning, driving up from Mountain Blvd, up to Skyline, and back down. The amount of broken glass along the side of the road (in both directions) was unbelievable. I would estimate I saw broken glass from ~30 cars along the side of the road. Please see the picture carousel below/right (Hover your mouse over the middle of the picture to see the left and right scrolling arrows).
Aug. 9, 2020: Below or right (phone vs. tablet vs. desktop) is a screenshot of the 50 (18" x 24") lawn signs (plus wire stands) that have been ordered. We hope to have them installed along JM Road by the weekend of Aug. 15-16. If you can help install them this upcoming weekend, please email 22Y NAC Chair Jay A. (oaklandbeat22y@gmail.com).
If neighbors can assist with the costs of getting these signs delivered and installed this week/weekend, please consider contributing via our Go Fund Me page:
