Hello young newsies & parents,
We are so excited about you joining M-A’s production of Newsies!
With limited backstage space- and many moving set pieces and bodies, it is important for our guest newsies to come to and from the show in costume. Therefore, we want young newsies & their parents to create each child’s costume. There will be a designated space and restroom backstage for younger newsies to stay when not on stage.
Each newsie should plan to have their own “look” that also matches the overall look and design of the show. Typically, these children were quite poor, many orphaned, and often homeless. Therefore, the goal is to create a well-worn (probably handed down from older siblings) look. At the turn of the century, children were still dressed like small “adults.”Â
In today’s world, I realize elementary age kids are not likely to all have slacks, suits, vests, and dress shoes. (And if they do- you probably don’t want them to be tattered, dirty, and distressed.)Â
I have tried to offer some suggestions as to how each student might pull together pieces that are more readily available. Newsies were boys and girls, so you may choose to be costumed as either, within the guidelines below.
Any style newsie hat is great! Any dark tones and patterns are good (stripes/ solids/ herringbone/ tweed/ plaid). Available in many places- including Amazon. Please no white/ pastel/ bright colors.Â
Hair should be pulled back if it is long, but no specific style is required. The main concern is that hair and hat are comfortable for the performer, and away from the face.Â
Ideally, dark solid colored button-up.Solid “hensley” style or long sleeved t-shirt would also work. (Dark stripes or plaid are ok, but no screen prints or visible logos.)Â
(Optional) If possible, a layer over the shirt would look great. This could be a knit sweater or vest (NOT hoodie/ sweatshirt) or a suit jacket or blazer. (This is not a requirement, so no need to purchase these!) Newsies might also wear a wool-looking jacket or overcoat. It’s not necessary for these to be a perfect “fit” as these children would have worn anything they could get their hands on.Â
Same dark color pallet as above. Pants can be full length or cut off below the knee.Â
The perfect look would be any brown or black leather shoe, boot, loafer. No open toes, open back, or sandals of any kind. If a leather “look” isn’t available, the next best thing is black, brown, dark gray, navy canvas shoes. If possible to avoid white/ bright soles and laces. (If your only option has white/ light colored sole- we can put a dark fabric tape on the sides to help disguise them.)
Any solid white, brown, black, navy (or other dark solid) sock or tights. (no athletic stripes or bright patterns, please)
