I started shaping my own boards in 2010 because I couldn't afford to replace the one that I broke. It was my dad's $1500 longboard and I snapped in 3 pieces on the jetty at Doheny. I got a blank at Basham's to replace it and Timmy Patterson was cool enough the show my dad and I the process of shaping. And that's how it started.
My Experimentation Phase
Growing up surfing SanO and Trestles was a great training ground for variety of waves and boards. But eventually, I had the itch to venture across the Pacific and Indian Ocean for bigger and more hollow waves. After shaping and surfing boards for several years, I had a pretty good understanding of how surfboards work in 90% of surf conditions and I wanted to venture to a new territory: glassing and sanding. It was tough! I did a lot of R&D that you can view on my Youtube. And candidly, I'm still experimenting haha.
With some inspiration from my wife, I started exploring new construction ideas and found things that could make boards more elegant, durable, and faster. And eventually we made some boards I was proud of and wanted to share.
Purpose
My goal is to simplify how surfboards are chosen so that you can get the most fun out of each board you ride. When I look at the surfboard market, I don't see a lot of purpose for models. Most brands seem to have a really similar set of models that seem more like marketing than utility. I also see a lot of abstract designs that don't seem to have a real purpose in for their design. So I try to give you a board with a distinct purpose for distinct conditions, and something I've surfed and enjoy. But if you want to get creative with a board, let's make something custom and build your magic board!
