Library Information

BCES Circulation System: Systems for circulating materials ensure that students, staff, and community members are using the library’s resources, and taking care of the materials. The primary goal of the BCES Library’s circulation system is to achieve an efficient and easy procedure that encourages the use of all library materials.

Procedures-Students:

1. Students will check out all books and materials at the circulation desk.

2. All students are eligible for checkout unless they have lost or damaged materials, or their parents or guardian have requested borrowing privileges be withheld.

3. All materials are checked out for 2 weeks. Any time before or at the two-week mark students may bring in their library book to renew checkout, for an additional 2-week period.

4. Damaged books should be brought to Ms. Saenz for assessment and repair. These items should not be repaired at home.

5. Students may be responsible for paying the average replacement cost of each book lost or significantly damaged.

Procedures-Staff:

1. All materials must be checked out on the automated circulation system.

2. All materials may be checked out for a six-week period. Items can be renewed as needed.

3. A written or email request may be presented to Ms. Saenz for books, videos, and software to be checked out and delivered to the classroom teacher.

4. Teachers may check out other items from other AISD libraries through interlibrary loans.

Materials Selection Policy

Policy Specifics

The librarian is responsible for the selection of new materials to be added to the collection. Material selection will be a continuous process in which the librarian welcomes requests from patrons, and will take requests into consideration when purchasing new materials. Material or purchase requests may be submitted through email. Please Include the title, author, and ISBN if available. All requests will be reviewed to ensure that they meet Bear Creek Elementary's library selection policy and criteria. The final responsibility in the selection process is vested in the school librarian.

Selection Criteria:

· Be selected to enrich and support the curriculum and personal needs of users.

· Meet high standards of quality in: presentation, physical format, educational significance, readability, authenticity, artistic quality and/or literary style, and factual content.

· Be appropriate for the subject area and for the age, emotional development, ability level, learning styles, and social development of the students for whom the materials are selected.

· Be designed to provide a background of information that will motivate students and staff to examine their own attitudes and behavior, to comprehend their duties, responsibilities, rights, and privileges as participating citizens in our society, and to make intelligent judgments in their daily lives.

· Provide information on opposing sides of controversial issues so that users may develop under guidance the skill of critical analysis.

· Insure that the race, nationality, or political views of a writer not prohibit the inclusion of a work.
