The BEAMS (Built Environment AI, Modelling & Sensing) Lab, led by Dr. Lu Li, Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental and Sustainable Engineering at the University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY Albany), is seeking highly motivated Ph.D. students to join the team in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027. Our lab conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of engineering, sustainability, health, and artificial intelligence. Current research areas include:
· Building Information Modelling, Simulation & Sensing, and Digital Twin
· Indoor and Outdoor Air Quality, Thermal Comfort, and Human Health Exposure
· Building Energy and Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems
· Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Control in the Built Environment
Preferred Qualifications:
· A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Environmental, Mechanical, Civil, or Architectural Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Public Health, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
· Experience or strong interest in one or more of the following areas: digital twins, modelling and simulation of the built environment, indoor/outdoor air quality monitoring, building energy systems, and AI applications.
· Programming and simulation skills are desirable, with preference for experience using Rhino, Grasshopper, EnergyPlus, ANSYS FLUENT, Python, or MATLAB.
· Prior research experience or publications are highly valued.
· Strong oral and written communication skills.
