Looking for our own Conference Website?
This club started as Harvard Model Congress, a group of twenty students who were determined to attend Harvard’s premier congressional simulation in February, 2017. Since then, the club has expanded to encompass many more students, including you!
Our mission began when we ventured out to teach Beacon students how to perform well at conferences. When we completed our first conference, we began to recognize the club’s potential to be so much more. Everyday, we are subjected to all laws and regulations created by policymakers in every level of government--in the United States Congress, in the state assemblies, in our city councils, in our district committees, and elsewhere. Now, we aim to educate our students about legislative policy everywhere. Inexperience is only a reason to learn, and we encourage everyone to take the initiative. Our generation is the future, and the sooner we understand how lawmaking works, the sooner we can start making them.
Throughout the course of the year, we expect that you will learn, above all, what the legislative process looks like. By participating in conferences, we hope that students will begin to understand the many factors that go into making laws, and begin developing the critical analytical skills required to adequately assess the function of written laws. We further expect that you will acquire parliamentary procedure as a second language, of sorts. And finally, but just as importantly, we want you to learn more about things you are interested in. One of the best things about legislation is how far reaching it is. No matter what you’re interested in, be it policy making, STEM or anything else, there is a place for you here. At the conferences (and leading up to them) you will have a chance to select the committees you will be a part of and research the topics you care about.
