Beach racing is a motorsport offshoot of enduro and motocross racing. As the name implies, riders on solo motorcycles, quad bikes, or sidecar combinations compete on a course marked out on a beach, often with man made jumps and sand dunes being constructed to make the course tougher.

Due to their unique nature, beach races tend to be very popular with riders and spectators, with some of the larger races attracting several hundred riders. However beach racing is known to be very tough on motorcycles, small sand particles can damage wheel bearings, chains and sprockets, and the soft, sandy surface increases the demand on engines and clutches. Beach races are generally held in early spring or late autumn. This is because seasonal tourist trade at seaside resorts is low during these periods, there is more space for riders and competitors to park, and local authorities are more willing to allow their beaches to be closed off and used as a motorcycle course, due to the extra trade brought by riders, families and spectators.

Sellicks Beach, South Australia has organised motorcycle racing on the beach and was held as early as 1917 with annual speed trials being held during summer until 1953 and with re-enactments in both 1986 and 1992. Annual racing resumed in 2017 after a 20 year period of no activity.[1][2]

From 1981 to 1991 the Veronica Beach Race was held in Scheveningen, The Netherlands. The event which features quad, sidecar and motorbikes races was broadcast in more than 15 countries. Since 2006 the Red Bull Knock Out beach race will take place in Scheveningen, only for motorbikes. New Red Bull Knock Out editions are scheduled in 2018, 2020 and 2022.[4]

Beach races are popular in the United Kingdom, and one of the most famous beach races is the Weston Beach Race, (previously known as the Weston Enduro) held on Weston-super-Mare beach in Somerset. The event which features quad, sidecar, solo and junior races, has been held since 1983, and regularly attracts entries of over 1,000 riders, with crowds of up to 100,000 watching the event over the weekend. In addition to Weston Beach Race the Amateur Motor Cycle Association run the Skegness Beach Race, this event attracts 25,000 spectators over the weekend.[citation needed]

Beach races are held each year from October to March in Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire on the east coast of England. The events, organised by the Mablethorpe Sandracing Club, cover a number of different solo and quad classes.[5] A beach race is also held in Weymouth, with proceeds from the event being donated to a local charity.

In recent years, a popular beach race has been held at Barmouth, Wales, however this event differs as it is run along the lines of a motocross event, on a shorter, motocross style circuit. Beach Cross Racing is also taking place twice a year, usually in March and October, at Margate in Kent, and known as Margate Beach Cross. The event which is organized by QRAUK, in conjunction with Island Events and Thanet District Council has proven to be popular with not only British riders but with a huge number of riders from the Continent. The event has both Quads and Solos racing around a specially prepared course on Margate's main sands and it attracts many thousands of visitors.[citation needed]

For just $15, you too could compete in the Pebble Beach Road Races. The infancy of American road racing in the years following World War II was often a semi-pro or amateur affair, but the 1950 event gained credibility when 23-year-old Phil Hill won the first running.

Brighton Beach Race Course was founded at Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City in 1879 by the Brighton Beach Racing Association under the leadership of entrepreneur and real estate developer William A. Engeman. Brighton Beach had both a mile-long course for flat racing and a 2.5-mile steeplechase course. The track and adjacent grand hotel consistently drew large crowds; and Brighton thrived until 1908, when New York anti-gambling legislation took its toll on the track. Although the track transitioned to automotive racing seeking ongoing viability, Brighton Beach was eventually closed in the 1920s.

The speed competitions along the beach by 1958 had graduated to stock cars, which used a 3.2-mile course that combined both the beach and the city of Daytona. Bill France, then a local mechanic, entered the inaugural race on March 8, 1936, and finished fifth. France dabbled in racing for 10 years, became a promoter and founded NASCAR in 1947.

By 1953, France recognized that development was going to make it nearly impossible to continue racing a course that utilized the city and the beach so he began plans on a permanent speedway. He signed a $2.5 million agreement a year later for what he decided would be a 2.5-mile tri-oval circuit with 31-degree banking.

The Daytona 200 motorcycle race continued to run on the beach until it moved to the speedway in 1961. The next year the venue hosted the inaugural running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona endurance sports car race, which this year launched its hybrid era.

This year, roughly 150 antique two wheelers made the pilgrimage out to the sand in Ishikawa Prefecture. Hundreds more enthusiasts and race fans lined up along to the beach to watch, and the parade of rigid frames, half helmets, and vintage style that followed was easily the coolest thing happening on the planet for 48 hours.

The first meet was a success overall, but the first annual running of the Chirihama Sandflats became an unexpected sensation. Images of vintage bikes racing wide open down a pristine beach spread like wildfire, which is especially wild considering social media was still in its infancy at the time.

On Sunday 19th February, Dutch cyclist Jules de Cock won his first national cycling championship riding a Classified Powershift hub equipped bike. Competing on the brutal and unforgiving beaches of North Holland, the 25-year-old Dutchman left his competitors in the sand and rode solo to victory.

Jules has been testing and racing with the Classified Powershift hub for over a year and winning the NK Beach race was a great way to finish off the season. After winning the Dutch National Beach Racing Championship in such a dominant fashion, we had to sit down with him for a chat.

JdC: It was a very technical start, so we knew we had to be really sharp. We were able to stay at the front and stay out of trouble. When we turned onto the beach for the first time, Ivar Slik attacked, and I knew I had to follow him. After the pace slowed a little, I managed to ride away from the group and get to the next technical section in the front, which is where you need to be.

In a word - Yes. However, our vigilant Race Officials make sure everyone plays by the rules - fair and square. If a Race Official determines that a Pumpkin Racer is in violation the Official World Famous Pumpkin Race Rules it is immediately declared a Cheater Pumpkin! The penalty for racing a Cheater Pumpkin is instant destruction by the Mallet-O-Justice (a large wooden mallet) administered by the Head Race Official. It is important to note that several race entrants routinely enter "Cheater Pumpkins" with full knowledge that their Pumpkin Racer will be smashed to bits for all to see and cheer.
