The Application of Soundscapes to Preserve Culture
Soundscapes describe a specific environment and culture by highlighting sounds that are native and unique to specific regions across our world. They can encapsulate the biodiversity and natural wilderness of an area, while simultaneously recording the human reaction and experience to a specific environment (Dumyahn, 2011). Soundscapes offer a unique perspective because the impression and perceptions left by sound vary from person to person. Therefore, sound can fully embody environmental and cultural viewpoints in a way that photos or paintings never could.

Conducted a literature review to determine the most effective methods for remote Participatory Action Research and sound collection
Viewed Andrei Dascalescu's documentary, "Planeta Petrila" which portrayed the closing of the Petrila Mine, and the aftermath for the community located in the Jiu Valley.
Interviewed Andrei Dascalescu about his experiences and connections to mining in the Jiu Valley to better understand the culture and landscape.
This film was directed by Andrei Dascalescu and was released in 2016. The team watched the film as a group and found it a useful resource for multiple reasons. First, Planeta Petrila was filmed in the city of Petrila, a mining community in the Jiu Valley, so we have been able to gain some knowledge and visual context to accompany our research. Second, we were able to contact Dascalescu and speak with him about the valley and his experiences with the situation there. Dascalescu connected us with the Planeta Petrila NGO and other contacts in the valley. We highly recommend his film to anyone interested in the topic or in the documentary genre as a whole!

Infographic Plan: Introduce Project to the Jiu Valley
Our project is focused on increasing participation in Kat Austen's soundscape collection project in the Jiu Valley, Romania.
One way we plan to accomplish this is by creating visually appealing infographics to advertise Dr. Austen's project. On the right is an example of the infographic we plan to refine and distribute through contacts in the Jiu Valley.
