Rules & Instructions

Rules & Helpful Information

  • All missions will become “live” in GooseChase at the morning of the Quest. You will have the assigned hours to complete as many missions as you would like or are able to.

  • All team players must work as one unit and stay together for the duration of the quest. You cannot split up to “divide” missions.

  • Each team will need a camera phone to capture your responses and to submit answers through the GooseChase app. If you choose to have the GooseChase app downloaded on more than one device, please make sure you do not create a new team but instead join your already created team from the list shown. You will need your team access code which can be provided by your team captain.

    • Team Captain: You can find your Player Access Code within the app. Navigate to the "My Team" Tab in the bottom-right corner (iPhone) or the top-right corner (Android). From here select the gear icon in the top-right corner. Your Player Access Code will be displayed here. Your team member will be prompted to enter this when they select your team name when joining the game.

    • If you have trouble with this, please let us know!

  • You may complete missions in any order.

    • To complete a mission, select it from the list and follow the instructions to receive the allotted points. Sometimes you’ll be submitting a photo or video, while other times you’ll be checking-in at a specific location or solving a puzzle or riddle.

  • Photos/videos, text answers and GPS check ins must be uploaded to the GooseChase app in real time during the allotted time frame. All answers submitted outside the timeframe will be disqualified.

  • Photos/videos must be original and/ or taken by your team on the day of the Quest. For example, if the mission is to visit T.D. Garden, you must submit a photo taken on the day of the Quest at T.D. Garden. You cannot google a photo of T.D. Garden and submit it.

    • The only exception to this is when a “photo memory” is requested. For example, “please submit a photo memory from a time when a team member attended a Patriots game”.

  • The GooseChase Leaderboard is a fun way to track the competition but remember, it does not reflect the final results of the game. You will receive points right away as you complete missions but all submissions are subject to review by the Quest Committee. The final winners will be announced at the BDS Fest on Saturday, May 15.

  • Having an issue with a text submission? If you believe you have submitted the correct answer but the app is not accepting it, please leave it blank and email Nina See at NSee@belmontday.org with your answer. The Quest committee will review after the game has closed and if the answer is found to be correct, you will receive the points before final winners are announced.

  • Questions Day of the Quest? If you have any questions on the day of the Quest please reach out to Pati Fernandez or Nina See at any time during the day.

Helpful Hints

  • Plan to strategize the order you will complete missions once you receive the mission list. There will be 150+ missions so make sure to look through all of them, either in the PDF document provided or in the app itself.

  • Missions will take you throughout Boston and the surrounding areas and towns. Some missions can be completed from the comfort of your home while others will require you to be at specific locations.

  • Different Mission Types:

    • Photo/video missions - Participants will find a specific object or place, or perform a physical or creative task and take a photo or video of it. The missions will say if a photo or video answer is required.

    • Text missions - Participants will enter a text based answer to a question asked. These are similar to trivia questions. Please note, answers should not be submitted with punctuation, emojis or in full sentences. Specific words are required for the answer to be submitted. Think carefully.

    • GPS missions - Participants will physically go to a specified location, communicated through the mission description or based on a given clue, and will submit their coordinates. If you have trouble entering your location in the app, please check your Wi-Fi settings.

FAQs

What is a BDS Quest?

  • The BDS Quest is a scavenger hunt challenge including three quests where teams, made up of your family members*, are encouraged to solve clues, complete missions and check in at specific locations while gaining points along the way.

  • Through an app called GooseChase, your team will track your missions and points. See below for more information on GooseChase.

*Teams are made up of family members. Due to COVID-19 and community restrictions we are unable to allow combined BDS family teams, etc.

How many days are the quests?

  • There will be 3 quests and each quest will be “live” from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on that day. The quest days are as follows:

    • Saturday, March 20 - Boston Quest

    • Saturday, April 10 - Nature Quest

    • Saturday, May 1 - BDS Quest

  • Each team will have the same amount of time to complete as many missions as they would like within the time frame.

  • Teams can choose to participate in one, two or all three scavenger hunts. It is optional.

Who should be on a team?

  • Each BDS family will have the opportunity to register and become a team. We are aware that every family is made up differently, and if you have questions about how to create your family team, please contact us for guidance.

  • Faculty can also make a team.

What platform are we using to complete the quests?

  • Prior to our first quest your team captain will receive instructions on downloading and joining the GooseChase app.

  • All Quests will be run through GooseChase. Once you register you will receive further communications about downloading the GooseChase app and signing up etc.

  • During each quest you will submit your answers, photos, GPS check ins right through the GooseChase app.

What is GooseChase?

  • When creating GooseChase the founders set out to create the best Scavenger hunt platform around. GooseChase is an online platform that helps organizers create and run digital scavenger hunt experiences for team building, learning, public engagement, or a variety of other events.

  • GooseChase allows us to create our own games (quests) and fill the games with missions. GooseChase makes it easy to get students, staff and families up and out of their seats, learning with an interactive scavenger hunt set up.

  • Missions (the challenges in each quest) will be made up of GPS location check ins, text answers and photo and video answers.

  • To learn more about GooseChase click here: www.GooseChase.com

When will we find out the challenges/missions of each Quest and how can we best plan our time for the Quest Days?

  • All missions/challenges and questions for the given theme (Boston, Nature, BDS) will become visible and live for everyone at 7 a.m. the morning of each Quest. Each quest will close at 7 p.m. on the event day.

  • We know you may want to plan your weekend ahead of time so keep in mind that for each of the Quest Days/categories we recommend the following:

    • Boston- Themed Quest, March 20 - Plan that you may want to spend part of your day in and around Boston to complete many of the missions. The best way to prepare will be to study/remind yourselves of Boston history, fun facts, sports teams, museums and cultural spots, universities etc. These categories will all be covered in the missions.

    • Nature-Themed Quest, April 10 - For our Nature Quest you will want to have access to the great outdoors! Somewhere with woods, wildlife, somewhere near the ocean, maybe brush up on your Earth Day facts! The best way to prepare will be to get excited to get outside on April 10 and explore nature in our surrounding communities!

    • BDS-Themed Quest, May 1 - Assume you will want to spend part of the day at BDS and the surrounding area! Helpful hint: You will want to brush up on your BDS trivia!

  • Stay tuned for more clues that may pop up in the Quest Corner of the Scoop on Fridays.

How do we win?

  • The family team with the most points for each Quest will win that individual Quest. After the third quest the team with the highest overall score is the overall winner. Winners will be announced at BDS Fest!

Stay tuned about prizes but we will give you a hint… there will be prizes for both the individual winning families and for cohorts who have the most points! SO even though you may not be on the same team as your classmates there is still a way to compete with them!

Why the change in event style? Traditionally, Belmont Day has hosted an auction event every other year to support the school’s initiatives. As we approached planning this year, we considered the need to bring our community joy while keeping safety front and center. In order to have community engagement and aspects of a fundraiser take place this year, our co-chairs got creative! With the scavenger hunt we are able to involve all members of our community and celebrate BDS.

Will the fest be an in-person event? No, unfortunately due to COVID and health concerns, the committee has decided that our fest will be virtual event. However, we do have a few surprises planned, so don't miss it!

Is there a deadline to register? Yes, the registration deadline is Friday, February 26. If you have decided to join the event after this deadline, please contact Pati or Nina in Development to further discuss.

Do I have to enroll in the GooseChase App? No, you do not have to enroll yourself on the app. Once you have registered with BDS, the committee will enroll and send your team captain a welcome email on the scheduled date.

Do I have to participate in all scavenger hunts to qualify? No, Teams can choose to participate in one, two or all three scavenger hunts. It is optional.

When are the winners announced? Winners will be announced at the fest on Saturday, May 15, 2021.

Can I create a team with other BDS families? No, unfortunately teams can only be made up of family members only. Due to COVID-19 and community restrictions we are unable to allow combined BDS family teams, etc. Each BDS family will have the opportunity to register and become a team. We are aware that every family is made up differently, and if you have questions about how to create your family team, please contact us for guidance.

Will there be a silent auction and can I donate to it? Yes and Yes! There will be an online silent auction this year. It will open on Thursday, May 13 and close during the fest. If you are interested in donating, thank you! We will be structuring our auction differently this year. We have themes and a request list available for the community. If you are interested in donating an item, please contact Nina See in the Development department to further discuss.

Will there be student art work in the auction this year? Unfortunately, there will not be student art available for auction this year. Due to the intensive art schedule in place this year, the art team will not have completed a rotation through all grades to do contribute the traditional pieces. We'd love to include the arts in the auction, if you have any ideas, please contact us.

What will the paddle up support? The paddle up fundraiser will be live during the fest and support winter/spring pool testing for all students and faculty.

If I don't have a device to participate, can the school lend us one? Yes, if you need a device we will coordinate a device and wifi services for you. Please contact, Pati Fernández for more information.

Can I volunteer? Yes! We have several opportunities for community members seeking ways to get involved. Please reach out to Nina See in the development department if you are interested in volunteering with us.
