Beverley Goodman, Associate Professor (Retired)

Linguistics Program

Department of English Language and Literature

Eastern Michigan University

Ph.D., Cornell, 1995

During my time at Eastern Michigan University, I taught introductory linguistics courses, undergraduate and graduate phonology, undergraduate linguistic history of English and graduate morphology. Courses in phonetics were not part of the curriculum when I arrived. With the help of several internal research grants, we gained a small laboratory space with recording equipment, computers and analysis software. I developed an undergraduate course in articulatory and acoustic phonetics and a graduate course in experimental phonetics. These courses were then included in our regular course offerings. Student projects in acoustic phonetics, specifically, often led to Honors College fellowships, local and international conference presentations as well as EMU’s Undergraduate Symposium and Graduate Research Fair presentations. Many of these projects also led to research resulting in MA theses. The hands-on work involved in acoustic phonetic linguistic research is engaging and inspiring not only for the professor but also for the students.

Before joining the faculty at Eastern Michigan, I taught courses at The Pennsylvania State University, The University of California at San Diego and the University of Wisconsin.

The time I spent in the phonetics lab at Cornell was a high point in my educational experience.

I am pleased to join the alumni of P- lab.
