Intro to me and LSHTM

Hi, I'm Manasseh and I've been a Bridging the Digital Gap Trainee at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

My interests and experiences have been in cultural heritage . Working as an events facilitator at the British Museum and a Learning Activities Assistant at the Tower of London. Previously I have been apprenticing at the National Archives, learning new skills in Software and Web Development. It was at The National Archives where I wanted to use my technical skills to face the challenge archives are facing with Digital Preservation.

Asset Bank

The School’s digital asset management system. I developed skills in acquisition, selection and digitisation.

I uploaded and managed over 1,700 images and digitised over 1,600 documents for the Infected Blood inquiry.

Asset Bank - Image management process

Step one - Select images. (If selecting images taken form an event or from a large collection of similar images ) The main task is not to select duplicates, similar images or images that have an obstruction.
Step Two - Upload the images onto Asset Bank. Here I added general information into the basic fields e.g. Title of Asset, Permission Owner, Folder location.
Step Three - Add metadata to individual images in a Batch update process. This is where I went through all individual images uploaded, to add specific information e.g. date, description/history of image & Archive catalogue number.

Digital Preservation

This is one of the Archives objectives of 2019 - 20 to prepare for the care of digital documents. I attended many Digital Preservation Coalition, National Archives and other digital preservation conferences, workshops & talks to build up my knowledge of digital preservation and gain an insight into how other institutions are tackling the issue.

When I pulled the first drafts together, I organised meetings with the Research Data Manager to edit, prof- read and really iron out the policy and procedure. Hopefully it is or will be a document that will be really useful for the archives and it’s future in collecting and caring for digital documents.

Bridging the Digital gap Module Assignments

The E- Learning materials for the Bridging the Digital Gap programme are modules of work-based learning activities that are designed to help gain the knowledge and skills as a Digital Archives Assistant throughout the course. The modules cover the key areas of digital archiving: Acquisition, Preservation, Access and Engagement. I was able to learn more about what it means to work in an archive and the basic principles of Digital Preservation. In each module there were several assignments to complete, I've given one example of an assignment from each module shown below.

Module 1 - Beginning with the basics of digital archival management. I went through the basics of traditional archive principles.
Module 2 - Digital Acquisition and Preservation. In this module I went through the steps of how records are acquired and the steps to ensure their safe and secure preservation.
Module 3 - Long- term preservation. One of my assignments was to write a Business plan, a skill needed for any Digital preservation project.
Module 4 - Allowing access to the archive collection. In this module looked at how LSHTM and other archives and other institutions allow access to their collections.
