It started with a call for help. Jane Horwitz had an idea and wanted support from her gardening friends of Beth David Reform Congregation. A group of us responded, and so our team was born. Jane's passion was tangible, and her idea simple: establish a community garden at Beth David. Although it was June, and too late in the planting season to pull together a brick and mortar garden, we quickly worked to create something to get the members of our congregation interested and excited about creating a garden in the future. One for us all to share, and to share with with our greater community through social action. Thus, was the conception of Beth David's Bean Bags for Good.
On June 25, 2020, we launched our project with the start of the Beth David Bean Bags for Good program. This program was designed to have participants pick up hand-sewn bags and all the supplies necessary to grow bush beans in them at home. As we get reports of participants seeing beans on their plants, we will ask everyone to bring back as much of their harvest as they wish to Beth David to be collected to be donated to local food pantries. This program is designed to get our congregation's members interested and excited about establishing a permanent garden on the beautiful grounds of Beth David Reform Congregation.
