"Support divisions, including [such services as] K-9, are such an important staple of a well-rounded Sheriff's Department." -- Fmr. Undersheriff Charlie Stone
The Patrol Services Division has seen a myriad of changes since its inception; nonetheless, it has emerged as a fully developed and implemented auxiliary division to everyday patrol operations. Under the care of Captain Mike Jones, it is entrusted with training, certifying, and regulating specialized support functions within the department, such as the following:
K-9 (CANINE) UNIT:
Formerly it's own division as a predecessor to PSD, this division oversees the training of all K-9 dogs and K-9 handlers. K-9s in the Blaine County Sheriff's Office are legally deputized sheriffs -- meaning their lives, care, and wellbeing are equally as important. PSD thoroughly ensures that K-9s follow their training to a tee, and that handlers are educated and equipped to care for and utilize their new partners.
AIR SUPPORT UNIT:
Formerly a subdivision of the Field Training Program, PSD now oversees the training and certification of our law enforcement pilots. BCSO has worked out a deal with the FAA wherein Captain Jones, who is an FAA-certified Pilot Instructor, may train both pilots and future pilot instructors alike in-house. Pilots and co-pilots will be taught how to operate helicopters and other aircraft, and how to use the electronic tracking systems equipped to them. As a department, we utilize aircraft for speed enforcement, search & rescue, and reconnaissance.
MOTORBIKE PATROL UNIT:
PSD trains our deputy sheriffs who are interested in riding a motorbike to patrol. With the ability to quickly navigate through traffic more efficiently than other vehicles in our fleet, Motorbike units are bar-none one the most effective speed enforcement and rapid-response units we have. They are also trained to be utilized for security escorts, and formal parades.
SPECIALIZED VEHICLE UNIT:
Our divisions may utilize several different unique vehicles to achieve operational success when acting within the parameters of their group (such as the Special Response Team, who utilizes boats for amphibious operations). However, we wanted to create an avenue for the average deputy sheriff on patrol to learn how to utilize special and unusual vehicles when the need arises. PSD trains these units to use super-charged Speed Enforcement vehicles, boats, jet-skis, ATVs, and other unique vehicles.
