Kiah Swinsburg (University of Tasmania), Lie-Markov birth-death models.
Abstract: Lie-Markov models are a class of Markov model consistent with time-inhomogeneous transition rates. Lie-Markov models have primarily been studied in the context of the nucleotide substitution models of phylogenetics. We extend this concept to finite 'birth-death' models, and propose a classification of the birth-death models of Lie-Markov type. Two central examples will be the Ehrenfest Urn model of statistical physics, and a model analogous to the Moran model of population genetics. We will also comment on how understanding the Lie-algebraic structure of these models allows us to write down exact solutions for their time-inhomogeneous transient dynamics.
