FAQs
General Questions
What sport are we playing and how long is the season?
We are playing dodgeball for the Winter/Spring of 2024! (Scroll down for Dodgeball FAQs)
Updated: The season will start February 11th and will go until April 14th with breaks in between (NO games 2/18, 3/10, 3/31). Each team will also have one bye week.
What time and where are we playing?
Games will take place on Sundays inside the JQES Gym from 12:45pm - 2:15pm. Teams will play one match of five rounds at either 12:50pm or 1:30pm start time.
What do I need to play?
The registration cost is $8 and each player will need to fill out a sign-up form.
You will need to bring a shirt of your assigned team color to wear during games.
What should we do if our team does not have a game (bye week)?
You are encouraged to hang out together and get lunch! Players without games can also sub for other teams if they would like to still play.
What is the policy on subs? What if my team needs extra players?
Your team can take a sub if they are registered to play on another team and the captains (opposing team and sub team) agree to the substitution. No subs during the playoffs.
Wait, there are playoffs?
Yes! All teams will qualify for playoffs that will take place on April 7th and April 14th. And yes, there is a prize. 😀
Can we sign up as a team?
The registration deadline has passed so we cannot accept new teams. Please see below for individual sign ups.
What are the responsibilities and qualifications for captains?
We require that captains are at least 18 years old and regularly attend a BCEC worship service or fellowship.
Captains will need to communicate with their teams and attend one orientation (online) meeting before the season starts.
We also expect that captains will serve as good examples of sportsmanship and competitive maturity on and off the field.
Are there any other team roster requirements?
Players must be at least 14 years old or in high school (9th grade and older)
75% of your roster must be regular BCEC attendees
Games will require 7 people on your team with at least 2 players of each gender on the floor when playing
Can I still sign up if I don't have a team?
Yes! On the registration form, please choose NO to the "I already have a team" option box and we will place you either on an "indie" team or a team with a smaller roster.
When is the registration deadline?
Registration closed January 28, 2024 - we cannot accept new teams but you can still sign up individually and join an existing team!
Dodgeball Questions
What are the basic rules of dodgeball?
Your objective is to eliminate all the opposing team members. You get someone out by hitting them with a ball (but not in the head). There will be 8 balls on the field and each round will have a 4 minute time limit. The field will shrink in half after 2 minutes. If a team is not eliminated by the end of 4 minutes, the team with the most players remaining wins the round.
How many people are playing? Can we swap team members during the game?
You will choose seven members of your team for each round and there must be two of each gender. You can only swap out and rotate team members once each round is over.
How many rounds do we need to win?
All teams will play a best of five rounds. Regardless of score, all five rounds will be played - the number of rounds won will be used as an end-of-season tiebreaker so do your best to win each one!
What counts as getting someone out?
Are there any other special rules?
There will be a safe zone in the middle of the playing field where players cannot throw from or be eliminated.
Players must remain inside playing field boundary. If anyone steps out for more than 2 seconds, they will be called out. The team boundary will shrink at the halftime mark of each round (2 minutes).
Players can only hold one ball at a time.
There is a time limit of 3 seconds when holding a ball - a player must throw or drop the ball afterwards.
Players that are eliminated must form a line and if a teammate catches a ball, players come back in queue order (first out, first to come back in).
A player can attempt a basketball shot to resurrect their entire team and succeeds if the ball goes in the opposing team's hoop. Be careful! The ball is easy to catch if you miss a shot.
