CHWs and CHW Allies serving Bexar County and surrounding areas.
To be an inclusive, equitable, and supportive network of community health workers, promotoras de salud, and allies who engage in policy development, advocacy, self-care, and training to better serve the whole community.
A more valued community health workforce.
Our History
BCCP was born in response to health and safety crises facing Bexar County, its most vulnerable residents, and the CHWs who serve them. Hence, the initial focus of BCCP was, appropriately, supporting CHWs as they faced an extraordinary public health and societal disruption while continuing to serve people in the midst of crises, particularly the longstanding COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic, beginning in 2020, and Bexar County’s deadly snowstorm of February 2021 had an important impact on the work of CHWs and played an important role in the creation of the Bexar County CHW Partnership (BCCP). More than at any time since 2013 the community was in desperate need of the services provided by CHWs. The COVID-19 pandemic created conditions that made many of the most vulnerable members in the community extremely reliant upon CHWs. Then, in February 2021, an unusual and massive snowstorm hit San Antonio and Bexar County. In San Antonio alone, more than 346,000 people were without power due to ice accumulations and other conditions that collapsed the Texas power grid. Statewide 246 people died in the storm, 16 of those in San Antonio. Once again, CHWs were called upon to help those in the community most affected by the storm. However, CHWs themselves were overworked and often struggling with the same pandemic and storm conditions as their clients. Some burned out altogether and many others worked daily on the verge of burnout. Something needed to be done to provide support, care, training, and resources to CHWs.

We are intentional about professional development and providing a rapid response to emerging public health crises. We support the entrepreneurial spirit of CHWs that make it possible for them innovate solutions with the community. We honor the participation of our members by utilizing lateral (collective) leadership and being intentional to provide training, coaching, support, and recognition. We are passionate about our work and our community.
