Becca, a BCB community member living in Denver, works for Jewish Colorado and has come up almost every Shabbat so far this season. The energy that she brings and her infectious smile help bring light to our community.
It’s a rare occasion when you can truly say you are getting the best of both worlds, yet the confluence of Judaism and outdoor adventure is exactly what you get when attending the Backcountry Bayit. After several years of having to chose between Shabbat observance and weekend skiing, the BCB has filled a much needed void by providing Shabbat dinners, good company, and even a place to sleep within the Colorado mountain community.
Last year, a roommate recommended I go to an event which involved snowshoeing up A-Basin at night. Even with no experience snowshoeing or snowboarding at night, my hesitation was short-lived, as I realized the potential to meet a new group of people who appreciate adventure, nature, and Judaism. The event was amazing and everyone who went had a fantastic time. And the same has been true of every event I have been to this year, be it a Shabbat dinner with music or a Chanukkah party.
The Backcountry Bayit has built an inclusive and welcoming Jewish community in the Colorado Rockies in a way that means something different to each person there. Some attend for the religious experience, some to create new traditions, and some come because of the amazing (and often vegan) food. Whatever the reason, the BCB has managed to provide a space for anyone from anywhere and at any age. I have met people from the Front Range and Summit County, people who graduated college in the past year and parents just visiting their children for the weekend. What is so incredible is the ability of the BCB to consistently cater to everyone. I have greatly appreciated each and every experience I have had this year and look forward to many more in the future!
