Letter from SG

2020/21 Election Update

Dear parents and students of Burnaby South Secondary,

We are reaching out to you to give you an update on the elections process that we have designed in light of the COVID-19 situation. We will be moving forward with the election process for the 2020-2021 school year and hope that all interested students apply.

The following are elected positions for which students can apply:

  • Grade 8 representative (x2)

  • Grade 9 representative (x2)

  • Grade 10 representative (x2)

  • Grade 11 representative (x2)

  • Grade 12 representative (x2

  • Grade 11 executive (x2)

  • Grade 12 executive (x2)

After careful discussion with our sponsor teachers Ms. Romain and Ms. Sandhu, modifications have been made to our selection and election process for the members of Student Government for the coming 2020/2021 school year. Students will be able to apply for a role in Student Government as a grade representative or executive online by following the link tinyurl.com/2020sg2021, which can also be found on our official instagram page @bbysouthstudentgov. All forms will be due Friday, April 24th, at 11:59 PM. After this time, applicants will be contacted to schedule their interview, which will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams.

For more information on these roles and their responsibilities, we would encourage potential applicants to go and read our constitution, which is found on our website: https://sites.google.com/view/bbysouthstudentgov

To ensure the anonymity of voters and impartiality of the election process, voting for candidates will not occur until we all return to school. All candidates who pass their video interview will tentatively be a member of Student Government and participate in the pre-planning stages of the organization until elections are able to be held.

There are also non-elected positions available, called Member-at-Large (MAL). Traditionally, there is a separate application process for this, but this year we may not be able to do so. Therefore, if you follow us on social media and join in on these activities!

Right now as a global community we are going through tumultuous time, but we are determined to stay positive and work through this together. If a student is interested in being a MAL, they should apply for a grade representative or executive role. We will most likely be choosing our MALs from the list of candidates who pass their interviews, but are not ultimately voted into an elected position by their peers.

In terms of the rest of this school year, Student Government members are working closely to organize online events to boost school spirit and bring joy to our students during this difficult time. We encourage you to any questions, concerns, or general requests that you may have, please do not hesitate to contact us through any of our social media or by email at bbysouthevent@gmail.com.

Best,

Linda Lin

Student Government President 2019/2020
