The North Region comprises Sublots 7 and 8 from Curdworth to Handsacre, and runs for approximately 30km. It stretches through a mainly rural landscape between Lichfield, Tamworth and down towards Coleshill.
Curdworth to Hints
Sublot 7 runs north of Curdworth for approximately 13km, through a mainly rural landscape between Sutton Coldfield and Tamworth finishing at Rookery Wood. At the southern end, the line splits with a spur heading towards Kingsbury.
The significant structures are Cudworth Cutting, M42 Marston Box crossing, Birmingham and Fazeley Canal Viaduct and Kingsbury Road Overbridge. As well as crossing major highways, there are river and watercourse crossings along the route including Langley Brook, Gallows Brook and Black Brook.
Sublot 7 is divided into two areas
Sublot 7.1: located in the south. In this section, Faraday Avenue is to be lowered by approximately seven metres, which requires a dual carriageway diversion. The materials from the excavation will be used to form the launch platforms for the Water Orton Viaducts, which are planned to be built from the Faraday Avenue embankment.
A major asset of Sublot 7 is the Marston Box crossing of the M42. The structure was built offline and then moved into place minimising disruption to the motorway.
Sublot 7.2: runs for approximately seven kilometres stretching from Church Lane Overbridge in the south to Blackbrook Viaduct in the north. Initial works include the set-up of the Sutton Road satellite compound followed by a hall access road. Main construction assets include Drayton Lane Cutting, Rookery Cutting, Hints Cutting, Brockhurst Lane Green Overbridge and Hints Culvert.
The main compound for Sublot 7 is Kingsbury, where there is also be an area for strategic stockpiling.
Hints to Handsacre
Sublot 8 is the northernmost section of IPT Area North with 16.3km of rural high-speed line to the east of Lichfield. The sublot connects to Sublot 7 at Black Brook Viaduct before heading north through the Swinfen Cutting, onto Streethay and then up to Curborough and Handsacre.
Sublot 8 provides an important connection to the UK rail network – the West Coast Mainline at Handsacre.
Sublot 8 is further split into four geographic sub-sections:
Sublot 8.1, Swinfen: Phase 1 of Swinfen includes a four kilometre cutting and several large structures that carry the local road network over HS2. Several major utilities are diverted as part of the works. The cuttings provide the primary source of earthwork materials for Sublot 8.
Sublot 8.2, Streethay: The critical path of Sublot 8, with eight major structures in a two kilometre length of the route. Comprising a 20m deep cutting, a large box slide under the West Coast Mainline and top-down crossing of the A38.
Sublot 8.3, Curborough: Containing some of the most complex stakeholder interactions, this section includes the Manchester Spur over a popular section of the English canal network. The diversion of Wood End Lane will contain some of the most complex traffic management challenges for the sublot.
Sublot 8.4, Handsacre: Technically very demanding and time-critical, Handsacre connects HS2 to the West Coast Mainline. Much of Handsacre is driven by major rail blockades throughout the whole project and collaborative working with Network Rail and HS2 Rail Systems is essential.
Key stakeholders include Highways England, Staffordshire Highways, Network Rail, Canal and Rivers Trust, utility providers and Health and Safety Executives.
