The Multimodal Learning Lab is a joint research group of the University of Aberdeen and the Nepal Applied Mathematics and Informatics Institute for Research (NAAMII), Kathmandu. Our research is focused in multimodal machine learning for resource-constrained, safety-critical environments: medical imaging and industrial perception in settings where annotated data is scarce, data cannot be pooled across institutions, and an undetected failure carries a clinical or operational cost.

Two principles underpin the group's activity. First, evaluation resources are treated as primary research contributions: we construct and openly release the datasets and benchmarks our research questions require, built with clinical collaborators. Second, the group functions as a research training pathway: research assistants at the Kathmandu site contribute to funded projects, publish, and progress to graduate study internationally, with thirteen former members having gone on to doctoral or postdoctoral positions.
