Reliable multimodal AI for clinical and industrial environments
I develop multimodal learning methods for settings where data are scarce, institutions cannot pool their data, and a confident error can carry a clinical or operational cost. My research connects reliability under distribution shift, learning with limited resources, perception in the field, and open evaluation datasets.
Research programme and group
I lead the Multimodal Learning Lab, a joint group spanning the University of Aberdeen and NAAMII in Kathmandu, where I am a co-founder and Adjunct Research Scientist. Our programme brings together doctoral researchers, research assistants and clinical collaborators in the United Kingdom, Nepal and Switzerland. As Chief AI Scientist at Fogsphere (Redev AI Ltd), I also direct research on perception for safety-critical industrial environments.
Potential PhD candidates: If you are interested in doing PhD at the University of Aberdeen, UK, please get in touch with me at: binod.bhattarai@abdn.ac.uk. Funded studentships are available through the University of Aberdeen's MRC Doctoral Landscape Award (Medical Research Council, UKRI), on which I am a Co-Investigator; the first cohort begins in October 2027. Applicants from China: the University participates in the China Scholarship Council (CSC) scheme, under which the CSC provides a living allowance and airfares for PhD study at Aberdeen, with the possibility of a University tuition waiver; please contact me first to agree a research topic. Eligibility and application steps: Aberdeen CSC Scholarship page
Prospective postdoctoral researchers: I am happy to host and support strong candidates applying for externally funded postdoctoral fellowships to join the lab. Relevant schemes include the Royal Society Newton International Fellowships (for researchers from outside the UK), the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships (open to all nationalities, subject to mobility rules), and the Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowships. Please contact me with a CV and a short research outline well before the scheme deadline.
