Be on the lookout for our members tabling at a variety of events in the beginning of the school year, from Late Night to the Pre-Law Kickoff event! It's a great chance to get to know our leadership and ask us questions about Mock Trial, including how to join.
Please fill out the interest form linked below! This lets us know you're interested and puts you on an emailing list that we will use to reach out to during the tryout process.
Interest meetings are mandatory in order to sign up for a tryout. We hold two information sessions, but you only need to attend one!
Locations and times for these meetings will be avaliable on our website by the beginning of the school year and at our recruitment events.
Tryout materials will be released to those who attended the interest meeting. We believe in practicing how you perform, so we recommend memorizing your materials. We will be hosting office hours (times will be provided at the interest meeting) if you would like help or have questions.
Aim to arrive at your tryout at least 10 minutes before the time you signed up for at the interest meeting. We will notify results individually.
July-August: Recruitment
Early September: Interest meetings
September 7th-11th: Tryouts
Mock Trial is a collegiate competition under the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA). Students compete as three witnesses and three attorneys per side, alternating between unique civil and criminal cases each year. Trial elements include opening statements, direct examinations, cross examinations, and closing arguments. If you want to know what a trial looks like, there are plenty of cases recorded online of top competitors (including us!).
Mock Trial develops skills that extend far beyond the courtroom. Members learn public speaking, critical thinking, teamwork, quick decision-making, and persuasive communication within a team dynamic. Whether you are interested in law, business, politics, medicine, or leadership in any field, Mock Trial provides invaluable experience. Additionally, the bonds you create with your peers often extends beyond just teammates as you create friends for life :)
Not at all! Many of our members join with little or no courtroom experience at all. We look for students who are motivated, coachable, collaborative, and willing to put in the effort. Our returning members and captains will guide you to develop the skills you need to succeed.
Not at all. While Mock Trial is excellent preparation for law school, many members have majors in or pursue careers in religion, business, healthcare, public policy, education, consulting, and more. The communication, leadership, and analytical skills developed through Mock Trial are valuable in any profession.
If you missed tryouts, you unfortunately will not be able to have the chance to participate in our current season. However we would encourage you to be on the lookout for tryout materials around the same time next year, as we usually have a similar intake timeline.
Tryouts is highly competitive, and many talented students apply each year. Not making the team does not reflect your potential or ability. If you don't make the team, don't let that discourage you! We would advise you to stay connected through our Instagram, continue developing your public speaking and advocacy skills, and consider trying out again in the future.
