Disability Representation in Fashion Magazines
Hello! My name Is Bayla Osden and in my podcast I go into depth with how disabilities are portrayed in fashion magazines and how this can affect people with disabilities. My group's overall topic is disabilities in media that we three branched off into our own topics. In the following podcast I discuss the effects that the lack of representation has on people with disabilities and how we can help this. Most fashion magazines severely lack representation when it comes to disabilities in any form. In my research I have found that, even though we have come a long way with breaking stereotypes and creating a wider representation, we still have a very long way to go to make sure people are represented as normal people. This can create loneliness and an unrealistic expectation put on oneself that will build unhappiness. I also speak about how we can help create wider representations within fashion and overall making people who don't fit an unrealistic standard, to not feel alone. Whether that's simply advocating for better representation to these magazine companies or even diving a little deeper and harder to push these norms and set yourself apart from others. All in all I hope you enjoy my podcast and if you or someone you know has a disability and is affected by stereotypes in the media you can share my podcast with them!
