Madison has a vibrant metro area of over a half million people. It includes UW-Madison, the state capitol, and many corporations (including especially tech and insurance companies). The weather is beautiful in June; visitors rave about how much they enjoy summertime in Madison.
Getting to Madison: If you're coming from Chicago, Milwaukee, or Minneapolis, inexpensive bus rides are available. Otherwise, Madison has a very convenient airport (MSN) that's 20 minutes from campus and has connections to over a dozen hubs. Or you can combine modes of travel—it's sometimes cheaper to fly into Chicago or Milwaukee, then bus from there.
Local food: Madison has a huge variety of dining options for any taste and dietary restrictions, from gourmet restaurants to food carts right outside the Philosophy building. Of course, this being Wisconsin, we also have the best beer, ice cream, and cheese curds in the world!
Local activities: We'll be pretty busy with the seminar during the weekdays. But on evenings and weekends there are many outdoor activities (hiking, biking, water sports on the lakes), a vibrant arts and live music scene, and the largest farmers' market in the nation on Saturday mornings. If there's sufficient participant interest, we will also organize a Friday night trip to a Madison Mallards game (our local semi-pro baseball team). We're also happy to help participants with specific interests find ways to explore the city while they're here, either individually or together.
