Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are essential components in modern electronics, serving as the backbone of most electronic devices we use today. The development of PCBs was a major breakthrough in the world of electronics, revolutionizing the way electronic circuits were designed and manufactured. Let’s discuss a brief history of PCBs
Early years
Printed circuit boards (PCBs) have existed for over a century, but their modern-day form was refined in the 1940s. It all began with the invention of the telegraph in the 19th century, when a simple
In the early 1900s, electronic circuits were constructed using point-to-point wiring. This involved connecting components using wires soldered to terminals or pins. This method was time-consuming and made circuits difficult to repair or modify.
In the 1930s, an Austrian engineer named Paul Eisler invented the first printed circuit board. He was working on a radio set for a company in England and was looking for a way to simplify the wiring. Eisler’s idea was to print the circuit design onto a flat surface and then plate the copper conductors onto it. He patented his invention in 1943.
World War II period
During World War II, PCBs were used extensively in military equipment. They provided a way to create complex circuits that were reliable and compact. After the war, the use of PCBs spread rapidly, and they became a standard method for constructing electronic circuits.
In the 1970s, a new process called “subtractive plating” was developed. It involved applying a layer of copper to a substrate and then selectively removing the copper to leave the circuit pattern. This method allowed for finer trace widths and spacings, making it possible to create more complex circuits.
Today, PCBs are made using various methods, including traditional subtractive plating, additive plating, and newer technologies such as laser direct imaging and 3D printing.
