The Union was on the back foot before the Battle of Gettysburg. As one soldier said, "What disgrace is greater than to belong to the Army of the Potomac?" With Union spirit so low, the Union needed a major victory to assure its citizens that they could win the Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg was that victory.
After the Battle of Gettysburg, the Union got a huge boost in morale. A Union soldier even said: "I never felt in better spirits...I see no reason why we will get whipped again."
3. The Union had 23,049 casualties. This was partly because there was a huge depletion in ammunition stocks, which lead to a lot of hand-to-hand combat.
