The Repurpose & Recycle Initiative is a student-led program dedicated to improving how our community disposes of batteries. Millions of batteries are improperly disposed of each year, causing environmental harm and safety risks.
What started as a single collection box at one school has grown into a larger effort to make battery recycling accessible, safe, and part of everyday life in schools across our community.
Improperly discarded batteries pose a serious threat to our environment, contributing to air, soil, and water pollution.
🌫️ Air Pollution: In landfills, batteries can release harmful emissions and undergo chemical reactions that contribute to greenhouse gas production, worsening climate change.
🌱 Soil Contamination: Batteries contain toxic substances, including acids and heavy metals such as lead, mercury, nickel, manganese, and lithium. When these materials leak into the soil, they can cause contamination that harms plants, wildlife, and entire ecosystems.
💧 Water Pollution: These pollutants can seep into nearby water sources, where they accumulate in plants and animals, spreading through the food chain.
⚠️ Human & Ecosystem Health: As toxins build up, they pose serious risks to both wildlife and humans. Long-term exposure has been linked to severe health conditions, including organ damage and cancer.
Without proper disposal, even a single battery can have lasting and widespread consequences, impacting both the environment and public health.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, lithium-ion batteries are becoming a major and growing fire hazard, especially in homes and apartments.
A recent Bay Area fire caused by an e-bike battery led to a death after toxic smoke exposure
These batteries can overheat, catch fire, or even explode, especially if they are damaged or poorly manufactured
The fires are particularly dangerous because they produce thick, toxic smoke that can become deadly within seconds
The number of lithium-ion battery fires has increased significantly in recent years, tracking the rise of devices like e-bikes and scooters
Turning Awareness into Action:
Less than 5% of batteries are recycled and collected. Considering that by 2030 there will be over 140 million electric vehicles each of them consisting of a certain amount of Lithium-ion battery, this could be a major problem. In order to spread awareness of this problem and to contribute to solving this I created a battery box and placed it in my school's main office on September 9, 2022. Within a month of having the box, we collected 5000+ batteries in our school.
Empowering Communities Through Battery Recycling Drives:
After collecting all of these batteries, I separated the Lithium and Alkaline batteries to follow hazardous material recycling rules. On March 18, 2023, I went to the Loudoun County Recycling event.
