INTRODUCTION
Do you ever multitask when you sit in the privacy of your own bathroom? Perhaps with a book or a Kindle? I understand that bathroom conversation can be a little embarrassing; for the past year I have been working with my own children to eliminate bathroom words from their vocabulary.
Imagine my chagrin when, after banning bathroom words at the supper table, I began reading from 1 Samuel 24 during family devotions and found King Saul defecating in a cave.
It quickly occurred to me that the one time bathroom humor is surely acceptable is when it is used by God in his infallible word. On top of that, I began to ponder how often I have done some of my very best reading and profound thinking while in a position similar to Saul’s. I have even referred to the toilet on occasion as my reading chair. According to studies, the typical adult will spend a cumulative 416 days of his life sitting on the toilet. If we round down generously and call it 10 minutes per day, that is still a seeming lifetime to think, meditate, and yes, read.
Ten minutes per day gives you 3,650 minutes a year to read Holy Poop: The Bible Bathroom Book. This book takes a look at bathroom language in the Bible and the inerrant truths it teaches. The author’s intention was to write a book that would not be intimidating and appeal to curious readers of all ages and spiritual levels.
Still, these things do not in any way make the word of God flippant, nor do we ever treat it irreverently. On the contrary, everything God does is perfect, including his choice of words. There is a reason God chose the words found in his book, the Bible, and those words tag life-and-death truths. So it does us well to consider the words of God in the following chapters - even the bathroom words.
