Counselling is an interactive learning process in which the counsellor, helps the patient to understand the cause(s) of difficulties and guides them to sort out issues and reach decisions.
Counseling is not giving advice, being judgmental, attempting to sort out the problems of the patient, expecting or encouraging a patient to behave as the counsellor would behave if confronted with a similar problem in their own life.
Basic Counseling Skills uses observation and empathic skills to assess and manage the patient’s emotions, determination, feelings, and attitude – their spirit and soul.
The purpose of this is to help nurses build trust with patients while also helping nurses/doctors and patients collaborate efficiently and effectively toward the patient’s physical and emotional wellness.
There are a total of 5 counseling stages that requires the counselor to
Initiating the session – rapport and structuring;
Gathering the data – drawing our stories, concerns, problems, or issues;
Mutual goal settings – what does the patient want to happen?;
The work – exploring alternatives,
Confronting client incongruities and conflict, re-storying
Terminating
