A team's success during a certain period is defined by the total number of wins they get and how they performed overall in comparison to the other teams. The 2 main factors that determine the most successful teams are their Total Win Percentage (Number of wins/Games played) during the entire period and Total League Wins (Each season/year only the team with the most wins is declared the League winner).
Findings from the graph -
New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have a considerably larger Win ratio than the rest of the teams.
Although, the major difference between the 2 teams is that Boston Red Sox has won the League twice while New York Yankees have failed to win even once during those 10 years.
Teams like Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals had much lower Win Percentages but with an equal number of League Wins as the Red Sox.
The key takeaways from these findings are that the top 2 teams of that decade were the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. But, it is clear from the graph that a higher win percentage does not imply more league wins.
A strong indicator to consider would be the playoff-style nature of this competition which follows the conclusion of the regular season wherein the top teams from each of the 2 divisions in the league play against each other with the winner being considered the League Winner.
The Yankees have fallen 4 times at the last hurdle indicating the possible influence of factors like injuries and luck, or worse lack of strategy and mentality in big crucial games.
Home runs is a term that is synonymous with Baseball. A home run is when a batter hits the ball out of the playing field and scores a run for their team. A home run hit guarantees at least a run, and a win is achieved by the team that scores more runs against their opposition. This suggests that home runs should be one of the if not the main defining factor for a team's success. But, the graph below tells us a different story.
Findings from the graph -
Although the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have consistently been in the Top 5, they were not among the top 2 for the majority of the years.
Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles had the most number of home runs despite having inferior Win percentages and 0 League wins.
Home runs can result in a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 4 runs in a single play (if no players are on the bases then just 1 run, and if all bases were occupied then 4 runs). We can interpret that the teams not winning as often are possibly not maximizing their home run values or are performing badly in other areas, for example, fielding.
The Yankees and Red Sox, on the other hand, are taking good advantage of the power of home runs and using it to win games. But, it is still not a clear indicator.
We can understand from the above findings that home runs is not the only contributing factor to a team's success. Other factors must also be considered and compared, and further deep dive is required to answer the question of what makes a team successful.
