Research Area -Policy of Zero Emission Trucks in India.
Thesis Details
Over two-thirds of India’s freight relies on road transport, dominated by fossil fuel vehicles, resulting in disproportionately high energy use and CO2 emissions; although road freight forms just 2% of the vehicle stock, it accounts for 39% of fuel consumption and 47% of transport-related CO2 emissions, highlighting an urgent need for zero-emission vehicles. Adoption of electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks (e-MHDTs) faces significant challenges such as limited range, inadequate charging infrastructure, high costs, weak policy support, and low awareness, while government initiatives like PM e-Drive and Bharat ZET Policy Advisory remain inadequate. Persistent operational, financial, and policy barriers hinder the shift from diesel to electric trucks, and varying uptake across truck applications indicates no single solution will work, underscoring the need for a comprehensive, application-based, policy-driven approach to accelerate e-MHDT adoption and address sector-wide obstacles.
