Everyone who camps with barrio sssh! will be part of one team. This is your opportunity to shine, take a lead, learn new skills and get more involved, not just with the barrio, but the Nowhere community. Experience is not essential, but commitment is. With every role there will be support.
Please read all the team descriptions to decide which team you want to join. If you join the build and take-down you still need to join a team during the event.
As well as being part of a team, everyone helps cook and clean for one meal, as well as share in two two-hour massage shifts.
IN BRIEF
KITCHEN TEAM - you will lead one meal during the week, so when filling in the kitchen form choose a LEAD SLOT.
MASSAGE TEAM - you will help offer one of our daily massage introduction workshops, perfect if you'd enjoy LEADING OR ASSISTING A MASSAGE WORKSHOP.
WORKSHOP TEAM - you will each be asked to support 1-2 workshops that need an ANGEL or GATEKEEPER.
WELLBEING TEAM - every lunch and dinner one person from the team will MAKE ANNOUNCEMENTS and be available to talk to anyone in need.
LEAVE NO TRACE / MAINTENANCE - you will take care of damage, repairs and recycling with two people each morning leading a BARRIO RE-SET. You make the barrio feel like home.

Each morning every team will re-set their space: collecting all MOOP (matter out of place aka rubbish), shaking dust off sheets, pillows, straighten chairs and the carpets. Whatever is need to make it feel like home.

TEAM LEADS AND THE BUILD
During the build, you will get to know everything about the barrio very quickly. As a small family, we grow together in many ways.
So that the barrio teams run as well as possible during the week, I encourage those who are interested in leading a team to join the team so that you can really make the most out of the experience.
BUILD TEAM
15 people: arriving on-site the Thursday before Nowhere starts. Together we will build the kitchen, massage space, communal spaces and geodesic dome, Friday through to Monday, breaking each day for siesta.
If you are part of the build team you also join another team during Nowhere itself.
Seeing the barrio grow from nothing is an amazing experience. I thoroughly recommend it. On the Monday when everything is built we always go to the local pool to freshen up, swim, laze and enjoy cool drinks.
Each year we hire a van from Barcelona and each year we need two official drivers. Would you like to drive our van from Barcelona on Thursday to Nowhere and/or drive it back on the Tuesday after Nowhere?
MASSAGE TEAM
12 people: 2 working together each day, to run one daily massage workshop and update the massage rota board (ensuring people do their massages on time), ensuring massage spaces are clean and comfortable with enough oil, and encourage shares.
The MASSAGE LEADS will organise huddles with the team to make sure everything is running smoothly.
Pre-event, the LEADS will email the team to agree their daily massage workshop schedule.
To be on this team you do not need to be a massage expert, however some skills are needed as you will be helping people new to massage, as well as leading or co-leading a massage workshop.
The daily massage workshops will run from 11am - 1pm every day, starting Tuesday with basic massage skills and ending Sunday with something more advanced.
As a team, you are responsible for keeping your space clean and working well throughout Nowhere. You will re-set it each morning and fix it after a storm.
WORKSHOP TEAM
12 people: 2 people working together each day to make sure the workshop space (our dome) is clean and ready for use each morning and throughout the day. You can agree within your team how you work.
It is important groups finish 10 minutes before the next group to allow the next facilitator to prepare, e.g. a 5pm-6pm session will end at 5.50pm. As a team, this needs to be communicated to workshop leads. Also, some more intimate groups need gatekeepers, which will also be the responsibility of the workshop team.
The team will also make call-outs during breakfast, lunch and dinner to speak to those running a group that day, update the workshop schedule board and generally help hold a comfortable, safe space.
As a team, you will also manage our famous MUD BATH (on Friday afternoon). On the Friday morning you will lead a team/workshop to dig the mud bath itself and refill it Saturday.
Pre-event, the WORKSHOP LEAD will be the main workshop contact, listing our events on the Nowhere What Where When guide.
KITCHEN TEAM
12 people: we all cook once, but to keep the kitchen running smoothly a core team will manage the kitchen (usually each day is managed by a pair) during Nowhere.
To be in this team, you need to love food, enjoy improvising and organising meals. Each team member will lead a meal. Therefore, before your cooking shift it's important you make sure all your ingredients are ready (especially when you have beans that need soaking overnight) and the kitchen itself is ready to go.
You will check food levels, make new food orders when required and have the option of riding into the local town for the 2-3 shopping trips we need (where you can treat yourself to ice-cream).
And to keep everyone fresh, you will refill the water dispenser and keep the ice cold rehydration dispenser filled.
The kitchen team will also liaise with the Nowhere water lead to ensure the main water cube is refilled 3-4 times during the week.
MAINTENANCE TEAM / LEAVE NO TRACE
12 people: Do you like to fix, repair, invent? Each year Nowhere presents new challenges and there's always something that needs redesigning or improving.
As part of this team you will maintain all of our structures. You are free to come and go, but if there is a storm all members of the team must return to the barrio immediately to secure items which could be blown away or damaged. If any big repairs are required all team members need to be ready to help.
The team will also maintain our two water cubes, two showers, grey water and organic waste & recycling; ensure the lights go on - and off at night, as well as operate our solar power system.
Leave No Trace means making sure we leave the site as we found it. As part of this, mid-week, we will have a "moop sweep" where everyone in the barrio will pick up every piece of waste, however small, lying on the ground.
The MAINTENANCE LEADS will liaise with the team to organise daily pairings.
WELLBEING TEAM
12 people: are you a good listener, do you tend to see the best in people? Working in pairs through the week, the wellbeing team will brighten the mood each and every day.
Each day during lunch and dinner one or two people from the team will make barrio announcements. People with information to share will come to someone from the team beforehand. During each announcement you will also sing the praises of one team or individual who has done something noteworthy. (People can nominate a person they want praised. If there's no nomination, you choose.)
People do burn out at Nowhere. After lunch and dinner each day, someone from the wellbeing team will be available for an hour to anyone in the barrio seeking support. If you are unable to support the person, you can take them to First Aid or Welfare Enough where they will find the support they need.
As well as offering emotional support, each morning the wellbeing team will re-set the communal spaces (not the dome/workshop or massage spaces), collecting moop, shaking dust off sheets, pillows, straightening chairs and the carpets so that the barrio feels like home.
To be in this team it's important that you can look after yourself and one another. As with all the teams, you are free to decide amongst yourselves how you split the tasks.
TAKE-DOWN TEAM
15 people (it's great if you all lend a hand). I ask that everyone who can stay take part in the take-down. We always have everything packed away in just one day - the Monday after Nowhere finishes - and often depart the Tuesday morning.
DAILY COOKING AND CLEANING ROTA
Everyone will share in one cooking and cleaning shift during the week in a group of up to 4.
ROUTINES FOR ALL MEALS
Clean and disinfect the kitchen surfaces, breakfast table and communal tables. Wash your hands with anti-bacterial fluid before cooking.
Ensure all bottles for drinking water are full. Monitor water tap on cube is secured and not dripping.
Replenish water in the first washing bowl, or all three if very dirty.
After the meal, clean all the cooking pots (returning them to the kitchen) and clean the kitchen so it is just as you found it. Put any leftover food in a container.
Empty the small compost bucket in the kitchen into the compost holes outside. If a hole is two-thirds full fill the rest with soil/dirt.
BREAKFAST ONLY
Prepare tea, coffee, chop fresh fruits and make a large bowl of porridge for everyone.
Put out fresh dish towels and hand towels for the day.
LUNCH ONLY
Buy ice and make fresh rehydration drink. Money to be collected from the KITCHEN LEAD. Make a second batch if it gets drunk quickly.
Put away any breakfast foods.
Top up earth fridge with water, ensuring the towels are wet and their edges touch the water in the buckets.
DINNER ONLY
Make a large pot of tea and coffee for everyone.
Check if any beans need soaking for tomorrow.
Empty any bins that are full and put a fresh bag inside.
