The work program of BARRIERS is structured into six Work Packages (WP0-5). WP1 to 4 address the four major goals of the project:
Advance understanding of surface chemistry and -electrostatics and surface diffusion in pure clay systems.
Advance understanding of electrical conduction and polarization in pure clay systems.
Advance experimental methods for broadband dielectric, μCT and SAXS/WAXS measurements on pure clay minerals.
Investigate the broadband dielectric response of pure clays under varying chemical and physical conditions.
The tasks of WP 1 to 4 (see schematic overview below) make use of the individual strengths of all project partners, are strongly interrelated, and only as a whole make up an experimental and model development workflow, which will enable us to address the ambitious goals of the BARRIERS project.
WP0: Preparation of standardized Na-exchanged Mt clay (WP lead: P. Leroy, BRGM)
WP1: Diffusion measurements, surface-complexation and macro-scale diffusion modeling (WP lead: F. Heberling, KIT)
WP2: Theoretical models of diffusion, electrical conduction and polarization (lead: M. Bücker, CAU)
WP3: Development and testing of an experimental cell to monitor clay hydration and ion diffusion using μCT, SAXS/WAXS and broadband dielectric measurements (WP lead: P. Kessouri, BRGM)
WP4: Broadband dielectric measurements on clay materials (WP lead: D. Jougnot, METIS)
WP5: Project management and communication (WP leaders: M. Bücker, CAU & D. Jougnot, METIS)
