Barracks of Ulhasnagar
An Oral History of a Refugee City
An Oral History of a Refugee City
Not all cities are the same.
Ulhasnagar is an example of this difference. Formerly known as the Kalyan Camp, this was where the Sindhi Refugees were rehabiliated. Later, Ulhasnagar became a city. Since then, and for a long time, it has been called the largest Sindhi township in India. For images, visit this page.
Before Sindhis settled here, it was a military camp for the soldiers to live in during the Second World War.
Apart from this interesting past, Ulhasnagar also has an intriguing present. It continuous to be seen as a notorious site manufacturing counterfeit goods. The 'Made by USA' or 'Made in USA' tagline is a joke: at some point, the counterfeit goods made in Ulhasnagar were promoted as being made in/by the USA in which 'USA' stood for 'Ulhasnagar Sindhi Association'.
This oral history and community archive project is a story of that city. We take a closer look at what the city is like from the perspectives of people who live there or have lived there. For details about the oral narratives, visit this page.
