About us

Founded in the 1960s in Hackettstown, New Jersey, Bark Away German Shepherds was built on a legacy of thoughtful, ethical breeding. Gloria and George Sokolowski were dedicated to producing German Shepherd Dogs of quality and distinction, guided by the GSDCA breed standard and the Breeders’ Code of Ethics. Their program produced champions in both the United States and Canada and earned a respected place within the German Shepherd community.

Today, Bark Away continues that tradition with a focus on temperament, type, and trainability. Each breeding is approached with care, supported by health testing, pedigree research, and a commitment to preserving and improving the breed. By planning only a small number of litters each year, we are able to give every pairing the attention and purpose it deserves.

My own journey with Bark Away began in 1993 under Gloria’s mentorship, and that foundation continues to shape the program today. In 2018, we welcomed our first litter of this new chapter — a meaningful beginning with a litter theme of “Glory” in her honor.
